My previous experience with The Wombats is exclusively that of their track “Let’s Dance To Joy Division.”  I never loved the song, but I’ve heard it an awful lot. This is due to the fact I constructed a playlist for my parents out of local radio station WBER’s 2008 year end best-of countdown, and the song placed fairly high on that list.  My parents just recently purchased a new computer and being a wonderful son, I transferred all of my music to them in a completely legal manner.  Thus far I’ve only constructed two iTunes playlists for them, and since they aren’t inclined to do it themselves the only other playlists are those of my younger brother’s.  My mother doesn’t listen to those.  Therefore I’ve heard The Wombats quite regularly at their house, as they are part of one of the only playlists that gets frequent play. It seems as if the following types of things happens frequently; an older song fades out of consciousness until something perhaps mystical, or merely coincidental, grabs it back in, all around the time that said band is releasing new material.

While stylistically different from “Let’s Dance To Joy Division,” “Jump Into The Fog” is at about the same level of interest for me as that previously limited experience with the band; I’ll give the song a listen, and might come back occasionally of my own accord, but not with any fervor. The new track is the second we’ve heard from their forthcoming 2011 release. The first is more enjoyable, if in a more blatantly obvious fashion. “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves),” and a few remixes of itself are available on a UK EP and I’ve streamed the track below.  I can see its appeal to the British masses, but it’s a bit too Good Charlotte for me.

[mp3] These Electric Lives – When the Time Is Right (Live @ WBER – 9/4/2010)

These Electric Lives at WBER [mp3] These Electric Lives When the Time Is Right (Live @ WBER 9/4/2010)Here we go again: talking about These Electric Lives.  Before this past Saturday’s show, the band went over to WBER (The only station that matters) for an interview.  While the interview ended up being a bit long for a band that, to this point, has only two EPs to their name, it was still interesting to hear Mark and Gary banter with the DJ about their songwriting process, whether they preferred Ginger or Mary Ann, and how their remixes come about.

And then, about halfway through the interview, the two of them played a previously unreleased song for the masses.  “When the Time Is Right” was written for Mark’s fiancé (if I remember correctly) a couple of Christmases ago, although I’ve heard it a few times since I’ve seen the band play four times this year alone.  And while that night in concert it came off as much larger and anthemic, with a nice crowd sing-along at the end, it’s great in a more intimate setting as well.  It sounds a lot more longing in this version, especially knowing how affable and engaging Mark is as their lead singer.

If you’re around Toronto tomorrow, go and check them out at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern.  You won’t be sorry.
