With a little more than two weeks remaining until Washed Out’s first full-length is released via Sub Pop, the hype machine has seen fit to drop another new track from it in our collective laps. (And, as of this morning, you can listen to the entire affair over at NPR.) The new joint is called “Amor Fati,” which, loosely translated from Latin, means “love of fate.” Like the name suggests, you won’t be able to help yourself here. It’s destined.
Not having listened to the entire album yet, I can’t imagine that we’re going to expect big changes out of Ernest Greene’s first LP. Sure, it’s a little more cleaned up and presentable, but underneath the sheen is still the same sun bleached, hazy dream pop that everyone fell in love with a couple of summers ago. There’s no reason to think we won’t all love it again. It’s like a summer fling: good for a couple of months, then we’ll all go back to the reality of the fall.

Be honest: how many of you thought you’d ever hear from the likes of Washed Out or Neon Indian or Small Black again after 2009? Perhaps its unfair of me to lump those three in together, but they all seem to be in the same chillwave wheelhouse. Washed Out, the product of Atlanta’s Ernest Greene, made undoubtedly the most recognizable release in the chillwave vein with his Life of Leisure EP and the anthemic “Feel It All Around.”
Greene is back with his debut full-length later this summer – July 12th’s Within and Without – which will be released on indie titans Sub Pop (which, incidentally, may lend some credence to the entire movement of which he seems to be the de facto leader). The album’s lead single, which was released earlier this week, is entitled “Eyes Be Closed” – and it’s similar to the bleached out vibe that Greene’s debut EP showcased, but with less of the re-recorded cassette tape warp that was prevalent there. I suppose that’s what access to a larger label will do for an artist – and it’s not a bad thing here.
Within and Without isn’t available for pre-order yet, but I’d have to imagine it won’t be much longer until that happens.

Under Alien Skies has a sound similar to Washed Out, so it would be easy to saddle them with the much-maligned chillwave label and leave it at that. But their music isn’t as sun bleached as Ernest Greene’s; this new track from the duo sounds the most connected to the other artists in that specific genre. Their only other release – an EP entitled Powder – sounds more Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy than it does Neon Indian.
But then, looking over their MySpace, there’s a picture posted that is taken through a rolling wave, which probably shoots my entire argument dead anyway. Maybe the chillwave crashed over onto UK shores after all.
Find the band on Twitter, where you can talk to the band about getting yourself a copy of their Powder EP. It’s not for sale, but I was told by the band that people can ask them for it. This track will be on a future, as of now untitled EP that should be available in both digital and physical formats.

Continuing on the day’s theme of dream pop (or chillwave, if you want to call it that) is the new-ish track from Washed Out. Released for the Adult Swim Singles Project, which is already through 5 of the 8 planned singles (with the next track being released tomorrow), the track features Caroline Polachek of Chairlift fame. It boasts a little more full sound than the previous Washed Out EP, and the addition of Polachek gives Washed Out’s ordinarily laid-back sound a lot more press to it.
Check out the rest of the Adult Swim Singles releases from the likes of Black Lips and Madvillain through the above link. Between Adult Swim (and Kia) and Mountain Dew, there are some solid things going on somewhere in the corporate world. I never thought I’d say something like that.
