We received an email about a pending 7″ split from KIY Records featuring tracks from The Babies on the A side, and His Clancyness on the AA side. I’ve written of His Clancyness on multiple occasions, and to my surprise the track on the split is that which I came to greatly adore last year, entitled “Ottawa Backfired Soon.” I checked into the wax, and despite my love of 7″ singles, it’s a rather expensive present considering conversion rates and additional shipping costs for the trip across an ocean.

I hadn’t heard anything from The Babies prior to this discovery, or so I thought. With what I learned subsequently, my lack of knowledge became surprising. Kevin Morby of Woods and Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls are the driving forces behind the side project, and their talents mesh in charming middle-of-the-road type way. ”Here Comes Trouble” is a rambling four-minute adventure that changes gears in between the second and third minute before closing with a flourish. Ramone’s warbled off-key voice doesn’t sound so jarring when balanced with that of someone who is not also a woman with a pitch problem. The guitar work is suitably enjoyable, a balance between the sleepy folk of Woods and the lo-fi garage work of Ramone’s Vivian Girls.
I totally missed the band’s debut album from earlier in the year despite having a song from it on my computer. “Here Comes Trouble” seems a better introduction than that, and it’s one I’m less likely to forget.

I can’t honestly say what separates Vivian Girls from Dum Dum Girls from Best Coast from (fill in the blank lo-fi girl group). They all have that retro-surf swagger that makes it difficult to distinguish one from the other. But the preponderance of those type of bands isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I mean, have you listened to this music? There’s a reason this stuff has come back into fashion of late: it’s good. And having more of it that’s done well isn’t a bad thing. Sure, at some point there will be a backlash of sorts, and some groups will fall by the wayside. But until that happens, let’s enjoy it.
Vivian Girls recently announced their third album, entitled Share the Joy, which will be released on April 12 through the fine folks at Polyvinyl. They’re also heading out on tour in support of the album with the likes of Black Lips, the dates of which can be found at their website. Share the Joy can be pre-ordered right now through Polyvinyl on CD, black vinyl or limited edition teal vinyl. Is teal vinyl worth an extra couple bucks? That’s a decision you’ll have to make on your own.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, we took part in this month’s Hype Machine Radio, which happened to go up today. Yesterday I wrote about Gamble House and the song of theirs I chose for inclusion “Second to None.” The wonderful editing team for Hype Radio managed to make me sound alright in my segment, so for that I thank them.
Related to that activity was the involvement of another blog from Vancouver, BC., Chipped Hip in the same September edition of Hype Radio. Alex from that site chose a track from Frankie Rose and the Outs to highlight, entitled “Little Brown Haired Girls.” Andy previously wrote about that track here on our site a while ago, so I’ve got another one from the band via Aquarium Drunkard that will be part of (or at least teaser for) an all girl-group mixtape they happen to be putting together. If you’ve listened to any of Frankie Rose’s previous bands, Dum Gum Girls/Vivian Girls/Crystal Stilts, you’ll have an idea of what you’re in for. This particular track is a cover of an old Dee Dee Warwick song, sung in a style all the rage these days.
