[mp3] These Electric Lives – When the Time Is Right (Live @ WBER – 9/4/2010)

These Electric Lives at WBER [mp3] These Electric Lives When the Time Is Right (Live @ WBER 9/4/2010)Here we go again: talking about These Electric Lives.  Before this past Saturday’s show, the band went over to WBER (The only station that matters) for an interview.  While the interview ended up being a bit long for a band that, to this point, has only two EPs to their name, it was still interesting to hear Mark and Gary banter with the DJ about their songwriting process, whether they preferred Ginger or Mary Ann, and how their remixes come about.

And then, about halfway through the interview, the two of them played a previously unreleased song for the masses.  “When the Time Is Right” was written for Mark’s fiancé (if I remember correctly) a couple of Christmases ago, although I’ve heard it a few times since I’ve seen the band play four times this year alone.  And while that night in concert it came off as much larger and anthemic, with a nice crowd sing-along at the end, it’s great in a more intimate setting as well.  It sounds a lot more longing in this version, especially knowing how affable and engaging Mark is as their lead singer.

If you’re around Toronto tomorrow, go and check them out at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern.  You won’t be sorry.

This past Saturday evening These Electric Lives once again made the short trip south from Toronto to play a show in Rochester. It was their third time in Rochester this year and second at the Bug Jar. My recap will be brief (it’s not even really much of a recap) because I rather unfortunately got a bit too silly to recall most of the evening. It’s also a bit of an apology to the band since I regret my choice of imbibing several drinks on the evening to excess. I hope the band does not think me a lush. I say this because for their previous Bug Jar appearance I was also far too silly. I can count on one hand how many times in the last few years I’ve gotten as inebriated as I did those two evenings, and I could do so just as well if I lost three fingers. I suppose These Electric Lives bring out the crazy in me.

The band members Gary, Mark, Charles and Bryan, are four of the coolest, nicest young gentleman you could ever hope to meet. I just wish I wasn’t apparently so excited every time they come that I drink far too quickly and get crazy. I would really like to catch another full set sometime soon. I only hope they can take this unfortunate recurrence as an odd compliment. The brief bits of the show I do recall are of enjoyment, and I know the band put on an excellent set once again. Thanks to the guys, I hope we can do it again soon.

P.S. Next time they come, I’ll be your D.D. if you need a ride, because you should certainly go check them out.

[mp3/concert] These Electric Lives and Mikey Jukebox – Saturday, September 4th, Bug Jar

l bf861aad594b4adbac070bc4c13d8603 [mp3/concert] These Electric Lives and Mikey Jukebox Saturday, September 4th, Bug JarIf you hadn’t yet realized, we like These Electric Lives.  Not only are we privileged to consider them friends, but they are a hell of a band as well.  If you haven’t heard them before, you need to listen.  If you have heard them before, you need to listen again.  The guys are great at what they do; their brand of indie dance rock soars on every track.  It’s eminently catchy and imminently singable; the band’s grip on melodic, anthemic songs is showcased on all their releases.

No strangers to the remix, the band has released at least one remix of each one of their tracks in official capacity; their first EP, released in 2007, was released again in 2008 with a 12 track remix album with each of the EP’s tracks being reworked at least twice.

They’re currently working on their debut LP; preceding that release, however, they released an 8 song EP (We See Light…) this past June – with 4 new tracks that will eventually be on the LP, as well as remixes of each.

I saw Mikey Jukebox perform as a band earlier in the summer, and in concert the album came across as far more straight-up rock than the album lets on.  When Mr. Jukebox and I talked about it, he made it seem like he was going to break things down a bit for this coming concert, opting to just use the song stems and a guitar.  He may not still be doing it like this, but his ideas sounded cool.

If you’re around Rochester on Saturday night (September 4th), please come out and support a couple of great artists at Bug Jar.  We’re going to be there too; come and say hello.  There’s more information over at Bug Jar’s website, and you can grab a couple of tracks here as well.

[mp3/mix] Tympanogram Summer Mix: post-spring

mix cover [mp3/mix] Tympanogram Summer Mix: post spring

It’s been a long time coming, really.  This is our very first mix in all our long months of existence.  We’ve talked about the vast majority of these tracks at one point or another here on the blog, but we’ve arranged them in such a way as to produce maximum listening pleasure.  (That’s not a lie.  I’ve had this on repeat for about 2 weeks now.)  You can get each track individually if you want to, or there’s a convenient zip file at the bottom if you just want to get them all in one shot.

Leave some love if you’re feeling up to it.  Leave some hatred for leaving off a good song.  Just get outside with some cold beverages, good friends and this mix.  Turn it up loud.  Do some daydrinking.  Enjoy the rest of the summer.

NXNE Day 2: These Electric Lives

DSCN1090 300x225 NXNE Day 2: These Electric LivesFriday evening, immediately following Elizabeth’s set, Toronto’s own These Electric Lives prepared for theirs at the upstairs stage of El Mocambo. We didn’t get much of a chance to explore the lower floor of El Mocambo, but the upstairs is a long rectangular room with the bar opposite the stage. Before Elizabeth began their set we could hear and feel the efforts of whichever band happened to be sporting their wares below us, but during the live sets immediately in front of us the lower floor’s sounds were imperceptible. In an unrelated note, on our way out the door following both shows, Andy and I stickered the men’s bathroom and stairways with Tympanogram stickers. So if you happen to attend a show there, keep an eye out for those.

DSCN1091 300x225 NXNE Day 2: These Electric LivesOnce again, just like back in March here in Rochester, These Electric Lives brought it during their set. The band is pure energy and have a stage presence about them that is all the more understandable given the personalities involved. I wish I had written down the set list to post here, but regardless, it was filled both with older and new material as well as a closing song neither Andy nor I recognized. At the conclusion to their set I found myself thinking the decision to have them headline our first birthday show was justified once again.

DSCN1092 300x225 NXNE Day 2: These Electric LivesRegarding some of that new material, the band sent us the first part of their debut album We See Light… a few weeks back, and it is impressive. We have a song below for you that hasn’t been posted much elsewhere to our benefit. Per usual, it’s excellently catchy dance rock with soaring guitar work and beautiful melodies highlighted by impressive vocals. I seriously don’t understand why more people haven’t picked up on this infectious brand of indie dance rock, and I suppose we can only continue to do our part here to spread the word.
