While browsing through our submissions inbox (and deleting a majority of the older stuff in there) I came across an email with two remixes by a fella name Micah Smith, who creates music under the moniker BEAKR. The names of the two originals BEAKR informed us he had reworked happened to be my main reasoning for initially opening the email, as they are both very strong tracks in their own right. In my poking around for more info I also came across BEAKR’s remix of The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition.” Looking at what he has remixed thus far, it is apparent BEAKR does a nice job in choosing originals, working off inherited strengths and giving them his own twist.

Slowed down and stripped of all original instrumentation, Alan Wilkis completely reinvents one of my favorite tracks of the year. It’s quirky synth-pop that builds and swirls over the course of the song, garnished with tweaks and audio embellishments throughout. It doesn’t pay much attention to the pace of the original, keeping the vocals around so listeners recognize what Mr. Wilkis is working with, but other than that, it’s entirely his own work.
There are enough idiosyncrasies here to keep any listener interested, unless you were so enamored with the original that the reworking becomes sacrilege. And if that’s the case, we’re asking you to suspend your disbelief and have a listen anyway.

This weekend is one of my personal favorites in Rochester – the Park Avenue Festival. It’s an arts/crafts festival, yeah, with a lot of cool vendors from all over the place, but the real draw is that the city blocks out the length of the street to only foot traffic, and the denizens of this neighborhood have all kinds of parties. My girlfriend and I are having people over here for beers, grilling, music, Kan Jam, etc. It’s one of the relatively few days I can still justify drinking before noon.
Here’s what I’ve been listening to in order to get myself prepped for a full day of drinking/relaxing/eating. Feel free to use them as accompaniment for whatever you’re getting into this weekend. The track by The Temper Trap is an excellent introduction to a band I hadn’t heard before. And based on the track alone, I’ll be looking forward to good things from them.
