[video] The Static Jacks // Drano-Ears

Chronicling their recent, brief tour of the United Kingdom, the new video for The Static Jacks’ “Drano-Ears” shows the band out exploring the country, able to blend right in with the rest of the tourist masses. I’d have to imagine that at some point they won’t be able to wander around so freely. At least I’d like to think so.

The New Jersey band’s debut album, If You’re Young, is out now.

[video] The Static Jacks // Into The Sun (Live on Fuel TV)

Our pals The Static Jacks played their song “Into the Sun” on The Daily Habit on Fuel TV last week, and this is the result of it. Their lead singer, Ian, really is like that when the band plays live, darting from one corner of the stage to the other, screaming his voice almost hoarse. They’re pretty fun to watch. But, I’ve never seen a mustachioed Abraham Lincoln share the stage with them before.

The Static Jacks finished filming this video just before they played here in Rochester at the end of September. “Fun” fact: bassist Andrew was left concussed after some of the televisions the band is surrounded with during the video fell. In fact, the day after they were in Rochester, he went to get the staples pulled from said injury. There’s no footage of that in the final version of the video, but I’m certain its not something he’d want immortalized anyway. The result of his head trauma? A great video for an even better song.

If you were around Rochester on September 22nd and didn’t come to see The Static Jacks play at Lovin’ Cup, you missed a hell of a show.  The New Jersey outfit played their entire debut album – If You’re Young – from front to back.  The band said they’d never done it to that point, and they didn’t know if they would ever do it again.  The band is off the road for the time being, gearing up for their upcoming tour with The Wombats that starts at the end of the month.

“Into The Sun” is the third track on that debut album, and it’s an energetic track, and one that’s nearly impossible to not sing along with (if you’ve yet to hear it).  We got our hands on it just before CMJ last year and wore it out with loud, repeated listens.  Earlier this week the band sent around an RAC Maury Mix of the track, and it adds a level of looping synth to the track that you wouldn’t otherwise find The Static Jacks exuding.  It might even make someone dance, dropping out the hard-charging guitars, leaving Ian’s distinctive rasp, and backing it up instead with drum machines.

It’s a sensational remix of a track that was special without it.

[review] The Static Jacks // If You’re Young

With its official release looming ever larger on the horizon, it’s time to give The Static Jacks’ debut album a proper write up.  Due out on August 30th, If You’re Young is the New Jersey outfit’s first full-length release, and it builds off of their previous three EPs, combining lead singer Ian Devaney’s distinct, throaty vocals with the band’s penchant for catchy pop/garage/punk.  In addition to Devaney, the band is comprised of Henry Kaye and Michael Sue-Poi on guitars, and Nick Brennan on drums.

The album starts off with a run of songs that, if you’re aware of the band’s previous output, will sound familiar.  There are tweaks to “My Parents Lied” – the standout from the band’s 2009 EP Laces – but for the most part the differences between the original versions and the ones that show up here won’t detract from fans’ enjoyment of what they already know.

The new songs run in a similar vein to what is already available from the band, although there are hints of the foursome trying new things here as well – flourishes of electronics, the back-and-forth with Ceci Gomez of Beast Make Bomb on the album’s lead single “Girl Parts.” For the most part, however, the band adheres to a well-tested formula: vox, guitar, drums, well placed swearing.  It’s a timeless system for a reason: it fucking works.

It’s easy to be dismissive of a group of early twentysomethings making slightly aggressive rock because the band is not reinventing the wheel.  But The Static Jacks succeed where so many other bands try and fail: in the ability to convey their feelings in a convincing, contagious manner.

On the whole, this is an album is about the opposite sex, about parties and friends (and bullshit), about the angst that is inherent in having the rest of your life ahead of you and not knowing what the hell to do with it.  There’s a universal nature to their brand of music.

The Static Jacks don’t miss on If You’re Young; you felt like they do once, or you feel like it now, or you will feel like it in a couple of years.  Regardless of where you fall on that particular spectrum, The Static Jacks will have you singing along with them.

If You’re Young is available for pre-order now through Fearless Records.  You’ll be able to check them out on the road with The Wombats starting at the end of October.
