The Rest were kind enough to send along their new track “John Huston” a little while back, which is from their soon-to-be-released album Seesaw. And then on Tuesday they sent the link to a video of them playing it at their “favorite movie theater.” It’s an interesting looking place from what we can see of it, with church-like pews lining the space. And then The Rest fill up the remainder of the theater with their immense sound, and it’s breathtaking. Check out the video for “John Huston” below, and head over to Southern Sounds to check out the video for a previously unreleased track as well.
The Rest will always hold a special place in the heart of Tympanogram; they were one of the very first bands to send their music our way, and they are undoubtedly one of the best to do so as well. After the past 18 months or so, which has seen them release an album that made our Top 10 of 2009, as well as a new EP and accompanying novel, the Canadian septet is gearing up to release their new album – entitled Seesaw in 2011.
Last night the band sent over the first song from the album, an orchestral cut entitled “John Huston.” After some Wikipedia-ing, I assume that the title refers to the screenwriter/actor/director John Huston, although it could also be the Nova Scotian politician since the band is Canadian. (Although the song’s first line says “take me to the movies.”) The track itself is rich and layered, showcasing Adam’s soaring vocals over the band’s elevated, encompassing music. It’s a powerful example of what the group does best; if Seesaw is comprised of more of the same, they will undoubtedly find themselves in our Best of 2011.
The band has a few dates lined up in the next couple of weeks – including two on October 21 in New York, which I can only assume will be a part of CMJ. Check out the dates over at their MySpace, and be on the lookout for more information on Seesaw as we get it.
7. The Rest – Everyone All At Once Andy : 10 :: Dave : 7
Before I began writing about music, I perused music blogs vociferously. Certainly I was interested in hearing things from bands I was already familiar with, but mostly I read blogs I enjoyed to learn of new music. I consistently read the submissions blurbs on the many blogs I read and thought it would be nice to have a band send their music to me, for my opinion on their work. Upon beginning this blog, and to a lesser extent on my previous individual site, such submissions began. For the most part it is a crapshoot, sampling brief bits of music out of the vast number of submissions we receive to see if anything is worth our while and interesting. Unequivocally, there has been no greater submission amongst the flood to make their way to our inbox, than the band whose album ends the year at number seven on our countdown.
The Rest is a seven piece band that hails from the not so distant Hamilton, Ontario. On Everyone All At Once, every single facet of the band’s work is wondrous. From lead singer Adam’s display of vocal range, to the craftsmanship of each instrument played, to the arrangements of each song, this is a band coming together to execute a piece of art. Back in the early days of this site, we described it as musical magnetic poetry, and I can think of no greater description.
We may not check our inbox as often as we should, but if we locate another masterpiece such as this album, we will be surprised. At this point, it is both surprising and disappointing that this album didn’t get more recognition than it did. I only hope that soon this band outgrows the likes of this little site, and makes its way its way into the conversation on those with bigger audiences.
We got an email from our friends The Rest (who really should have outgrown any friendship with us at this point), keeping us up-to-date on their happenings. As it turns out, Everyone All At Once has found UK distribution, so if you’re on that side of the Atlantic, make sure to pick up one the best albums of the year starting this Monday, October 12.
Not willing to leave it at that, though, the band is also hard at work on a new EP entitled Cried Wolf. The EP will be accompanied by an illustrated novel that tells the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, this time as an adult.
Here’s the catch: the EP and novel will be released the first of each month through January 1st – with a new section of the novel and a new mp3 each month. The first section is already up, and can be viewed through their label’s website here. The band is offering up the first track from the EP as well – their unique take on Swedish songbird Robyn’s “With Every Heartbeat.” They’ve managed to rework the track into their signature lit-rock sound, and it sounds just as grandiose as we’d expect.
Tomorrow is the Rochester St. Patrick’s Day Parade; we imagine this holds true in a great many places across the nation. Andy’s never been a big parade goer, but the allure of drinking heavily is too good for him to pass up. Plus, he hasn’t been out in a couple weeks, so this seems like a good time to put the drinking shoes back on.
For some reason the two of us never seem to hang out on St. Patrick’s Day. Perhaps that is due to Dave and his family’s intense Irish-ness and the associated clan-like symptoms. Instead of doing whatever Andy is, he shall be close to the parade at a downtown hotel, but will likely just walk through the parade on his way to the all-you-can-drink event just as he did last year. Five hours and as much Guinness as you can drink. After that who knows what will happen.
Here are a few tunes meant to get you in the mood to do some drankin’. And really, they’re not drinking songs as much as they are songs that vaguely reminded us of the holiday from the title of the song or the band’s name.

Basically, it sounded like a cool name for a blog intended to be primarily about music. We’d both had other blogs previously, but over beers it was decided that more damage could be done as a joint venture. And here we are.
We share a passion for the undiscovered and under-appreciated, and hope that you’ll be able to find something you love as well.

I like music. I can't describe how I came to like the music I do, because I don't know how or why, I just do.
Many years ago, Napoleon's brother, my great-great-great-great-great-great Grandfather, came to America. He was asked his name on Ellis Island while being processed as an immigrant. Not understanding English, he was under the impression that he was being asked how he had arrived in the new land. So he turned around and pointed at the sea vessel and said, 'LaBarge.'

I come by my music taste of my own free will. My friends listened to 2Pac, my parents to contemporary Christian and me? Sunny Day Real Estate. I can’t explain it.
