I never expected something this crunchy out of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. So much for buzz words, but the band’s new single, the debut track of their sophomore release, moves beyond its simple beginnings. “Belong” is the title track off the sophomore release of the same title. The shoe-gaziness of their of their debut is still in place, but the guitars have moved to the forefront. The Brooklyn band put on a fantastic show at the Bug Jar in April of 2009 (with the criminally underrated These United States).

I never thought I would hear this fully fleshed out version. On the heels of two shows in Rochester (at the Bug Jar and the German House with Surfer Blood and Hooray for Earth), The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have clearly moved in a louder direction. (Amen for drunken writing.) I saw them at the Bug Jar, on the heels of their much buzzed about debut. Flood, the producer behind The Smashing Pumpkins’ greatness (which I am still not a huge fan of), helms this new direction for the Brooklyn band. While the old sound felt delicate, the new sound signals a new direction. It is hard to argue with progress.

The “Belong” single is due out March 15 via Slumberland.

[stream] New from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Heart in Your Heartbreak

786 300x300 [stream] New from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Heart in Your HeartbreakThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart have been busy over the past year and a half or so; after releasing their debut LP in February 2009, they put out a follow-up EP and single as well, in addition to almost constant touring.

They’re now preparing their second full length for release in March.  “Heart in Your Heartbreak” is the lead single from that forthcoming album, and it’s obvious that the band has invested more into the production value here, sanding down the rougher edges that were prevalent on their debut.  The resulting sound is more fully realized than on previous releases; it’s another fine example of what the band does best.

The single will be released on December 14 via Slumberland + Fortuna Pop, but it’s not available for pre-oder yet that I can find.  The band will also be heading out on a brief tour over the next few weeks; check their MySpace for the total list of dates.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

I’m pretty excited about all of the bands we’ll be seeing this Friday evening including Surfer Blood, Hooray For Earth and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. I’ve never seen any of them live but enjoy each on their own merit. We’ve mentioned POBPAH multiple times here so I have nothing new to add. In case you haven’t seen the John Hughes-esque video or heard the associated song from their 2009 EP of the same name, here is a warm-up for the show Friday night. If you are in Rochester and are attending the show, we hope to see you there and possibly meet some of the few who may regularly read this site.

Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3

To finish up our brief look at what we think were the best EPs from this past year, we’ve got four of ‘em.  I had originally planned on three, but I forgot about one of my favorites.  I won’t tell you which I left off of my original list.

black Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer

Previously sold exclusively at their shows, Blitzen Trapper’s Black River Killer EP is an extension of their 2008 release Furr.  At just over 17 minutes for 7 songs, it’s a quick showcase of what Blitzen Trapper does best – their unique, Northwestern take on indie-folk.  Black River Killer will further endear them to previous fans, while offering enough to reel in new ones as well.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s Higher Than the Stars EP is a nice companion to their acclaimed self-titled debut that came out earlier in the year.  Their shoegaze influenced twee-pop is as affecting as here as on their debut, but it doesn’t expand anything in a new direction.  Their formula works well, and with the 4 remixes tacked onto the end of the EP, it shows that even if it’s reorganized, it’s still just as good.

Three of the four songs on Bon Iver’s January EP Blood Bank were written for his now-epic (and two years old) For Emma, Forever Ago.  Not included because they didn’t fit thematically, they work here as their own separate entity.  Aching and melodic, Blood Bank is a stellar look at where Bon Iver has already been with his last release, and where he could very well go with his next.

We found out about The Static Jacks after discovering Amie Street in May.  They were our first giveaway on the blog, and their September EP Laces showed marked improvement over their previous EPs.  Gone are the rough edges while their testosterone-fueled and handclaps version of garage rock is retained.  It’s upbeat, confident, and shows off a band ready to own their piece of stardom.

Well now you’re all in for it. Since we here at Tympanogram are the definitive source for all music knowledge just about anywhere, as we begin our top ten list of the Best Albums for 2009, these following ten records are all that you need to buy if you want to be cool. I’m, like, totally serial.

Our top ten begins with twee -poppers The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Despite the band name being a bit ostentatious and a mouthful, POBPAH never seem anything more than sincere. This young four-piece from New York City has crafted an album that sounds like it came straight out of the eighties. Each of the album’s ten songs are potential singles of the snappy, immediately catchy variety. With deceptively somber lyrics, for the duration, you never really feel down because of the ever present glee in the poppy arrangements and Kip Berman’s, John Hughes Soundtrack-esque voice. Not content with merely creating a debut album, the band also released and eight song EP. Higher Than The Stars That, in addition to some remixes, is filled with songs that would fit right on the end of this record.

An impressive debut to say the least. If you have been reading this top ten list and feel the overwhelming need to go out and listen to this album (in the event you haven’t already) then I’ve done my job.
