At this point, Big Echo is still well within the running for my favorite album of 2010. There are few other albums I’ve listened to more. In “All Day Day Light” we get another swell single and another entertaining video. Each and every track off the album merits single-dom. As for the video, it is nothing spectacular, just an enjoyable few minutes honoring a good song. The best thing the video does is highlight the best part of the song, which is the sets of three handclaps.
In honor of the band I assumed was going to be playing the concert Andy and I are viewing this evening, here is “Stitches” from The Morning Benders. The session was recorded last December, and it’s pretty damn awesome. I’m fairly upset they will not be one of the openers tonight, as realistically, I was anticipating their set the greatest. Oh well, I’ll have to be sure to catch them another time, hopefully before they release any newer albums (yes, that is a worry us Western New Yorkers must endure, big concerts are few and far between). Oh, to have been in this room…
My favorite track from what is easily one of my favorite records of the year has been given the video treatment. I imagine I will be professing love for this song at some point later in the year, so this video will have to suffice instead of fawning.
I am always keen to locate b-sides because oftentimes I am curious what a band’s decision making process entails when there are extras that must be left off of records. I generally find that I enjoy b-sides – perhaps because of their limited nature – but not having been the author I can only respect the artists choice to leave certain tracks out. I can understand why The Morning Benders avoided including “Go Grab A Stranger” on Big Echo; it’s a more sinister, jaunty track that initially sounds as if it would have been out of place amongst the sprawling sounds of the a-siders, and then it transforms and moves into something I could easily see placed amongst the original ten. But then again I don’t put albums together so what do I know?
The Morning Benders – Go Grab a Stranger from the Go Grab A Stranger single
Andy wrote about The Morning Benders a while back, so with that and other contributing factors that I will mention briefly, I am just going to link to the song he put up in said post directly from Hype Machine. The reason I too, am writing about them now is that their record Big Echo is my early favorite for best album of the year.
Several weeks ago I was working an early Saturday morning and looking for some listening material to pass the time. I was on music site Lala and saw that I could play Big Echo in its entirety, so I gave it a go. Immediately I could sense this wasn’t going to be a wasted decision as I was captured from the first note. This enrapturement was sustained up to the final note, so I went and listened to it all the way through again, something I never do. My enjoyment should not actually be a surprise, as Veckatimest was my favorite album of 2009, and The Morning Benders are a utilizing a similar formula here. I suppose that only makes sense given that a member of Grizzly Bear has a production credit on Big Echo.
The main reason I am not posting a track of the record is that I haven’t actually gotten any mp3′s. I purchased a vinyl copy of the album off Insound expecting a link or code to download the digital version as well. To my unfortunate surprise no such implement to download was included despite the plastic slip-cover’s promise. I have written to Rough Trade to determine how to get the digital version of this album that is owed, but thus far have gotten zero response. I truly hope I don’t have to break down and buy a digital copy of it. My desire for a portable method of listening, the lack of response to my mp3 query and the fact the record is so good, indicates strongly I may end up buying it again in its different form.
If you haven’t heard it yet, I strongly recommend doing so.

Basically, it sounded like a cool name for a blog intended to be primarily about music. We’d both had other blogs previously, but over beers it was decided that more damage could be done as a joint venture. And here we are.
We share a passion for the undiscovered and under-appreciated, and hope that you’ll be able to find something you love as well.

I like music. I can't describe how I came to like the music I do, because I don't know how or why, I just do.
Many years ago, Napoleon's brother, my great-great-great-great-great-great Grandfather, came to America. He was asked his name on Ellis Island while being processed as an immigrant. Not understanding English, he was under the impression that he was being asked how he had arrived in the new land. So he turned around and pointed at the sea vessel and said, 'LaBarge.'

I come by my music taste of my own free will. My friends listened to 2Pac, my parents to contemporary Christian and me? Sunny Day Real Estate. I can’t explain it.
