[mp3/video] Brandon Flowers – Crossfire

In a testament to my lack of interest, both in his solo work and with that of his usual band, I’m a month late or so in talking about this Brandon Flowers video. The best (or maybe only good) part of the whole thing is that Charlize Theron is in the video, turning gender roles on their head. Theron is the hero, repeatedly rescuing Flowers – who occupies the damsel-with-a-shit-eating-grin-in-distress role – from mildly inept ninjas. As for the song itself, I found it to be only okay. Kind of in the same shimmery eighties pop sound he hasn’t really done much with in his last few efforts. I wonder if the ninjas keep capturing him because he doesn’t make very good music.

The Killers – Change Your Mind

Killers HotFuss The Killers Change Your MindWas there ever a band more quickly maligned than The Killers?  (Maybe Vampire Weekend.)  I found their first album almost wholly refreshing amidst the garage-rock reinvigoration of 6 or 7 years ago.  But after their first album, I haven’t been interested in anything else they’ve released.  None of the lead singles from any of the albums sounded interesting; instead of fresh and exciting, it all seemed sort of boring to me.

Was I wrong about their first album?  Was it equally as boring as I’ve found their subsequent material and I was just unaware?  Or have they, rather, come back down into the land of the middling?  I think the latter, but that’s only because I’m into self-preservation.
