[video] The Flaming Lips // I Am The Walrus

Was there ever a more obvious cover than The Flaming Lips doing one of the stranger songs from The Beatles? Sure, Coyne & Co. turn up the guitar on it, and drop the reading of King Lear from the end, but otherwise, it’s a nice version of the classic that was recorded in the band’s home base of Oklahoma City.

The Black Keys – Tighten Up

The+Black+Keys+Black+Keys The Black Keys Tighten UpThe Black Keys’ new album – entitled Brothers – will be released on May 18.  There’s not much that they do that I think is wrong, and this new track from the album is no exception to that.  ”Tighten Up” was produced by Danger Mouse, who was at the helm for Attack & Release as well.  And while there’s not a big departure here from the normal Keys fare, it’s still a solid song.  I particularly enjoy when it sounds like everything goes into an audio drain, although that could be because this is a web rip.  You can listen to the track on the band’s MySpace for any differences.

This past weekend I purchased tickets to The Flaming Lips show at a venue close to Rochester, where it’s being reported that The Black Keys will be the opening act.  I can’t find this information on their website however, so I’ll keep hope alive until I see some kind of confirmation.

1000 Minutes: Dave #41

1000 Minutes: Dave #41Seeing as how Andy trumped me with the Ra Ra Riot mention in his own 1K, I will not be discussing my love of “Oh, La” in this particular edition. Though I did want to mention something I read on Twitter this past week. It was in regards to the curious practice of certain blog writers including on a resume that a song they had written about had reached number one on Hype Machine’s popular list. This idea is so ridiculous to me I don’t even know what to say about it. I don’t really know what to write on my own resume in terms of this blog, but I certainly would never write that we have had songs reach the top of Hype’s popular list. Yet maybe I’ve been foolish and I should write everything this blog achieves on my resume. Either way, go here to learn more about our 1000 minutes project.

84. The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize? (mp3) from Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 1000 Minutes: Dave #41 (3:32) [Time Remaining: 656:05]

I heard “Do You Realize” the other day and was immediately prepared to include it in this week’s post. I listened to it and then realized, no pun intended, that I could not include it without also writing about “Fight Test.” I have never been a huge Lips fan and own only a small part of their eclectic catalogue, yet I could likely listen to all of the band’s records and not find an album I would enjoy better than Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. Upon first hearing Yoshimi as a slightly disillusioned youngster with no proper aim in life, “Fight Test” was some pretty heady stuff. Sure, it’s a concept album about robots and “the Dane Cook of martial arts,” but it also delves deeply into ideas of death and mortality. These two songs in particular are eminently relatable, which is some feat considering they concern beings that can’t feel.

Brain Jukebox

jukebox ipod Brain JukeboxI figured it was about time I wrote something for this here new site, so I thought about what song(s) I’ve been wearing out since I last wrote something. The first came to mind immediately. If you haven’t heard it then this quick remedy will enhance your day. The second I have heard a lot and it has been consistently stuck in my head.

Washed Out – Feel It All Around (mp3) from the Life Of Leisure EP Brain Jukebox

This track is meant to be repeated – and frankly I have done so – superfluously. The barely three minutes pack a solid punch of moody atmospheric retro-pop. I love the drums that break in every now and again and the vocals match the synths perfectly. Just try and not like it.

The Flaming Lips – Convinced of the Hex (mp3) from Embryonic Brain Jukebox

I don’t love this song, but I do like it. As I mentioned above it has forced its way into my brain and is having difficulty escaping my ever present brain jukebox. If you don’t know what I mean by that then you are not a music person. It was about time Wayne Coyne got back to making music so I don’t have to hear of him bitching about The Arcade Fire or fake bitching about Bradford Cox anymore. In fact, make another record with a robot theme would you?

Go help your sister set the table for today’s lucky, leftover tacos edition of the Smörgåsbord. Check out some spicy Ra Ra Riot remix portions and then a sufficiently flamed cover tune, and finally get some remixed Madvillain on the side.

And by the way, if the guacamole looks a little brown on top, it’s just from being out in the air. Scoop it off and dig back in.
