[mp3] Merry Christmas!

After going out Christmas shopping this past weekend, I’m in the Christmas spirit about as much as can be expected; for me, it’s not particularly much. (My girlfriend would undoubtedly tell you that I’m kind of a Grinch.) But I do like decorating and listening to A Charlie Brown Christmas like my family did when I was growing up. With ten days left until the actual holiday, I figured it was time to display some Christmas spirit around these parts.

There are a glut of free holiday releases available, and while I don’t want to go and list everything I’ve come across – mostly because Christmas music isn’t meant for year-round consumption – I did want to share a couple of tracks that I particularly enjoy around this time of year. I hope the holidays – whatever you celebrate – are treating you all well. Around here, there’s been record snowfall – and while it’s nice to look at, it’s really starting to wear on me already.

p.s. This version of “O Holy Night” is one of the most moving I have ever heard. It’s my favorite Christmas song.

Starflyer 59 – No New Kinda Story

Back when it was first conceived, Tooth & Nail was my musical savior. They were a little more punk oriented as I got older, but the fact that I could purchase their wares at my local Christian themed bookstore made them acceptable in my parents’ house. And while a lot of it was blatant rip-offs of what was going on in the rest of music – albeit two years too late, there were a few bands that are still enjoyable. Starflyer 59 is one of those bands. “No New Kinda Story” is one of my favorite songs of theirs. While it’s a far cry from the dream pop/shoegaze of their early releases, I think they hit their stride here. (Purists will undoubtedly disagree.)

an examination used to test the condition of the middle ear and mobility of the eardrum, and the conduction bones by creating variations of air pressure in the ear canal.

Basically, it sounded like a cool name for a blog intended to be primarily about music. We’d both had other blogs previously, but over beers it was decided that more damage could be done as a joint venture. And here we are.

We share a passion for the undiscovered and under-appreciated, and hope that you’ll be able to find something you love as well.
