mp3 Smörgåsbord #6

mp3 Smörgåsbord #6In a special, corned beef and cabbage version of the Smörgåsbord, we’re serving up just a few b-sides – the first from Vampire Weekend (for anyone who isn’t in on the hipster backlash) and the second from the band riding the coattails of a certain utensil’s fame, and finally a b-side that is better than anything off the band’s release that it was attached to.

Vampire Weekend – Ladies of Cambridge (mp3) from the Mansard Roof single

Spoon – Don’t You Evah (Ted Leo’s I Want It Hotter Remix) (mp3) from the Don’t You Evah single

The Kooks – No Longer (mp3) from the Konk b-side disc Rak

1000 Minutes: Andy #1

desertisland 1000 Minutes: Andy #1This morning we’re going to try out something new we’re calling “1000 Minutes.”  The idea is simple – we’re both stranded with an mp3 player that never needs charging and can never be updated again.  These players hold exactly 1000 Minutes of music – bit rates and file size don’t matter.  We’re not going to be rescued, and we’re not together, so we can’t each load up different songs and share.

The question: What do each of us do with that 1000 Minutes?

We’re going to keep a running total for each of us, which you can access toward the top of the page if you’re curious as to how we’re both holding up.

I’m starting easy, with two of my favorite songs.  I suspect that the first few posts will go this way with songs I consider to be favorites, but I’ll run into trouble when the time starts to grow short.

1. Tahiti 80 – Heartbeat (mp3) from Puzzle (3:27) [Time Remaining: 996:33]

I’m hopeful that in this scenario we’ve created I’ll be stranded somewhere warm, and this song is just about perfect for sunny weather.  It’s pure saccharin, and I have yet to get tired of hearing it.  It pops up every now and again in movies and TV shows, and it always makes me smile.

2. Spoon – You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb (mp3) from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (3:11) [Time Remaining: 993:22]

Ga x 5 came out a couple of summers ago and floored me.  This was before I had an iPod, and had just gotten a CD player put in my car.  That disc didn’t leave until Daylight Savings Time ended that year.  This is my favorite track off of that album.
