It’s strange to think about how Halloween has changed from when I was younger. It used to (obviously) be all about the candy, then it morphed into a mischief making night with my friends, and now it’s become a drinking holiday – where it’s stayed ever since. (Although I can’t deny Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.) I suppose that if/when I have kids it will change back into being about the candy, but for now I’m content to NOT dress up and go drinking with my friends instead.
I hope everyone has had an excellent weekend thus far. I went to a party last night, so tonight will be spent watching Dexter and baking pumpkin seeds (since I live in an apartment and get no kids coming to the door). Here are a couple of not particularly scary, loosely thematic songs to get you through what’s left of October.

While browsing through our submissions inbox (and deleting a majority of the older stuff in there) I came across an email with two remixes by a fella name Micah Smith, who creates music under the moniker BEAKR. The names of the two originals BEAKR informed us he had reworked happened to be my main reasoning for initially opening the email, as they are both very strong tracks in their own right. In my poking around for more info I also came across BEAKR’s remix of The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition.” Looking at what he has remixed thus far, it is apparent BEAKR does a nice job in choosing originals, working off inherited strengths and giving them his own twist.

This song is fucking gorgeous. It should be since it is basically Pachelbel’s Cannon. And once again it was used in Vanilla Sky. Cameron Crowe certainly knows his music.
53. Spoon – I Summon You (mp3) from Gimme Fiction (3:55) [Time Remaining: 782:47]
I haven’t included a Spoon song thus far, because I couldn’t quite place which of theirs would be my favorite. They are pretty high on any list of favorite bands I might make, and since this is clearly an Sp bands type of day in my 1K, I felt it was time. To limit my search I started looking at albums as a whole to quickly eliminate possibly unworthy selections. Immediately Ga x5 was eliminated, and as much as I love it, so too was Kill the Moonlight. I also eliminated some older stuff and EP’s, and decided to focus on their modern masterpiece Gimme Fiction. From this album I selected a few favorites and ultimately decided the above track was my favorite, but man was it incredibly tough.
Aren’t you glad you have a resource like us to filter out all the crap that’s released each week by the music industry? If you think I’m being sarcastic about something on our list, it’s a safe bet to just assume that I am.
This week seems to be all about re-issues and box sets, so if you were waiting for Whitesnake to re-release Slide It In, this is your week. Otherwise, get the Wilco and the Spoon and call it a week. We hope it’s a good one for you.
