[mp3] Sleigh Bells // Run The Heart (DISCOFORGIA Remix)

sleigh bells discoforgia remix [mp3] Sleigh Bells // Run The Heart (DISCOFORGIA Remix)

Sleigh Bells were always a prime target for remixes. Their noise-pop debut Treats was basically the musical equivalent of a massive, metal aping firework, the size of a camper van, being shot into the sky with a small yet feisty brandishing a megaphone going “SOULWAX! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ALL THESE CRAZY BEATS I GOT GOIN’ ON!” Or something like that. And I’ve often had the feeling that, if I were doing a DJ set, I could comfortably just play the whole of Treats and give myself half an hour chilling at the bar.

Diplo got his hands on “Tell ‘Em” a while ago and unexpectedly removed what you’d have thought was the most remixable part of the track –  that mind blowing riff. The result was however, if you ask me, brilliant. And a remix of “Run The Heart” was, when I first saw it on my computer screen, a similarly strange prospect. “Run The Heart” already sounds like a club/trance banger in its original form. It’s one of the few moments on the album where Derek Miller’s heavy metal guitar more or less bows out and gives way to the pure glory of some bass beats. So what does this remix of the track have to offer?

Well at over 6 minutes, a hell of a lot. Alexis Kruss’ haunting vocal riff is slowed down and drizzled over the top of the track which starts of with an insistent bouncy beat before giving way to the natural trance synths of the original track. Then the beat returns, bigger and bouncier than before, like a fat kid back for more cake. This is a process repeated a few times. A lot of the original is totally done away with, the vocal line an essential part of the mix but not the basis of it. The track repeatedly spaces out, then the beats kick back in, fatter and with more swagger than before. By the time we’ve reached the end, we’ve got a whole array of heavy and irresistible clicks, thumps beats and wub-wub-wubbing going on. There’s a vast amount crammed in there and, like I said, it’s less a remix and more a sampling of the “Run The Heart” vocal line, but it’s all just so gloriously bouncy and overwhelming by the end that I don’t really care!

Grab this, slap it, turn it up. Enjoy!

[mp3] In Brief // Sleigh Bells – Tell ‘Em (Diplo Remix)

Sleigh Bells Treats 300x300 [mp3] In Brief // Sleigh Bells Tell Em (Diplo Remix)

We get lots of submissions.  We come across lots of music.  Does all of it warrant 250 words?  Nope.  Our (brand new!) “In Brief” series is an attempt to highlight tracks that are worth a listen but that might not warrant a write up.  You get more music and we don’t feel as bad for not having all the time in the world to write.  Win/win.

(With apologies to Listen Before You Buy for basically copying this idea from them.  We did rename it.)

Sleigh Bells – Tell ‘Em

l ba5a7fc8d24a454980ea0a24a165540c Sleigh Bells Tell EmAbout a month or so ago – maybe longer – I made the drive to Syracuse with my girlfriend to check out Sleigh Bells.  We never ended up seeing the show, but that’s a longer story for another time.  Bottom line: I wasn’t feeling particularly well, and the situation – from the venue to the opening band – exacerbated my overall displeasure.

This, however, has nothing to do with Sleigh Bells apart from it being them who I was going to see.  But I’d be lying if I said this experience didn’t affect my opinion of the band negatively.  Their new track “Tell ‘Em,” however, goes a ways to repair that damage – despite it not being their fault at all.  The track is from their forthcoming debut, Treats, and it’s a wall of sound throughout, a Howitzer of drums and guitar blasts.  Consider yourself told.

New Releases: November 24

New Releases: November 24The biggest release this week isn’t even coming out until Black Friday – so pick it up at 4AM if you’re going out shopping, or whenever you wake up from your turkey coma if you’re sane enough to not go shopping.  Blakroc – the collaboration between The Black Keys and rappers ranging from Mos Def to Q-Tip to Raekwon – hits shelves on Friday, and it’s probably the most excited I’ve been about a release this year – and this has been a great year for music.

If you’re not into that, there are various mainstream big releases to vie for your attention, so check out the list and pick your poison.  I have two completely unrelated-to-the-list-and-to-each-other tracks after the list, but they’re ones that have been in my head over the past week or two.  Have a great holiday shortened week.
