[video] Old Tapes // Queen

Here’s the bee-utiful video for Old Tapes’ “Queen” from their debut EP, This Is Good-bye, which was released in October of last year. Oh, and if you weren’t aware, we helped with pressing a couple of songs on the EP to 7″ vinyl, which you can still get if you click on that annoying red bar at the top of the page. (And if you do get a copy of the 7″, we’ll give you the rest of the EP as well.)

Old Tapes are playing a show with Joywave and Dave & Marissa tonight at Bug Jar, so if you’re around Rochester, come out and catch them live. No guarantees that the bee in the video will be there.

[mp3] Dave & Marissa! // Hit Like Waves

Dave and Marissa Move On Cover [mp3] Dave & Marissa! // Hit Like Waves

Local folk rockers Dave & Marissa! have taken their time getting their second EP released. Their first effort, …Explain It All, was released in August of 2010, and since then, the then-trio has expanded in numbers to five. Their newest effort, …Move On, is a four song glimpse of what they’ve all been doing over the intervening 18 months or so, as its accompanied by a set of B-sides that were also recorded during the making of the EP. So while four songs might not seem like a lot of output for the past year and a half, it’s really more like ten when both the EP and B-sides are factored in.

…Move On comes out this Thursday, when the band has a release show at Bug Jar, opening up for Joywave and Old Tapes. The EP and the accompanying B-sides release will be available at their shows, and probably on Bandcamp; until then, below find the track “Hit Like Waves,” which showcases the easy Americana folk and glorious harmonies of the band’s namesakes.

[video] Mikaela Davis // Casimir Pulaski Day (Sufjan Stevens Cover)

If you haven’t heard Mikaela Davis before, then you’re in for a real treat. This harpist from Rochester is currently honing her craft at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, an expansion to an impressive resume that includes starting the harp in 3rd grade and spending four years in the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. To simply describe Davis’s sound, her voice is stunning and her musical talents are humbling.

She occasionally returns to her hometown to grace us with a show, and luckily we’re in for an exceptional evening of music when she shares the stage with Shara Worden at the Bug Jar on Saturday, January 14, opening for a My Brightest Diamond solo performance. If you’re in the area, this is sure to be a show that you won’t want to miss.

The video is of Davis covering Sufjan Stevens’ “Casimir Pulaski Day” from his Illinois masterpiece. It’s a wonderful rendition that possesses enough similarity to pay tribute to one of her influences and enough of her creative arrangement to showcase her musical prowess and claim the song with a style of her own. You’ll want to return to this one again. I promise.

[stream] Introducing // The Absolutes

Buckle up, because we’re about to take a trip through time, landing in a gradated period that meanders from 60′s Brit pop to manic garage rock in a matter of milliseconds. The Absolutes, based out of the Rochester suburb of Penfield, play a style of guts and glory rock ‘n’ roll that holds an immense amount of energy and releases it in the form of heavy guitar strums, steamrolling rhythms, and organ melodies that’ll cling to your mind for dear life.

In the song below, “Everybody’s Feeling Alright,” the band kicks off their jollies with a howl and furious drumbeats. The vocals are more reminiscent of the 60′s pop style, while the pronounced keyboards and distorted guitars bring to mind the stylings of mid-70′s underground rock, before the ‘punk’ label started getting slapped on bands. What The Absolutes provide is a fun sound. It’s upbeat. It’s raucous. It’s rebellious. Yet, it has a feeling of maturity in the way the songs are arranged.

The Absolutes released a full-length album back in August of last year titled Everybody’s Feeling Alright, and I suggest listening to the entire album to absorb the catchiness and quality of the band’s songwriting. If you want to check out how band’s songs translate live, they will be opening for Liana Gabel and Los Doggies tomorrow, January 7 at the Bug Jar here in Rochester.

[mp3] The Dads // Don’t Know How To Eat That

The Dads Clip Art Cover [mp3] The Dads // Dont Know How To Eat That

Over a month ago now we posted the video for a new song from local band The Dads. The video, for “Don’t Know How To Eat That,” was an amalgam of clips of the band playing, sledding, drinking, etc. Now, the band is releasing that song as a single from their upcoming album, Clip Art, which will be out next Friday, January 13th. Clip Art finds the band at their loudest of all their releases to this point, more accurately sounding like how they are live. The eight song release will be available digitally through the band’s Bandcamp page, as well as physically on limited, handmade CDs.

In support of the album, the band is also heading out on a brief, six city tour around the Northeast, starting with a release show next Friday, January 13th here at Bug Jar in Rochester. The rest of the band’s dates are below, and if you’re available to check them out, it’s highly recommended.
