mp3 Smörgåsbord #15

mp3 Smörgåsbord #15No singing at the table during today’s Smörgåsbord.  (Was that a rule in anyone else’s house?)  For today we have a wistful, meditative Phoenix remix, followed by the only Jens Lekman song I’ve ever really enjoyed, and finished with another remix.  Enjoy your meal.

Phoenix – 1901 (Build Remix) (mp3)

Jens Lekman – A Sweet Summer’s Night On Hammer Hill (mp3) from Oh You’re So Silent, Jens

Alaska In Winter – Berlin (Doctor Rosen Remix) (mp3) from the Berlin Remix single

Saturday Morning Shorts

shorts Saturday Morning ShortsHere are some things we didn’t get around to posting this past week.

1. Paul Banks, lead singer of Interpol, will release a solo album under the name Julian Plenti on August 4.  While you probably knew that already, maybe you didn’t hear the first song off of it.

Julian Plenti – Fun That We Have (mp3) from the forthcoming Julian Plenti Is…Skyscraper

2. Kings of Leon will be playing the MTV Movie Awards. It’s no longer cool, or even ironic, to like them now that MTV has attached themselves to the band.

3. There’s a new Modest Mouse EP set to be released in August as well, entitled No One’s First & You’re Next.  Leading up to that, the band is supposedly releasing a series of 7″ singles, the first of which is set to come out on May 26.  Here’s the first track.

Modest Mouse – Satellite Skin (mp3) from the forthcoming No One’s First & You’re Next

4. If you hadn’t noticed, the much-anticipated, much-leaked Phoenix album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is for sale on iTunes, two weeks prior to its official release.

1000 Minutes: Dave #3

deserted island 1000 Minutes: Dave #3For today’s installment of the 1000 minutes project I was tempted to include 1901 from Phoenix, strictly due to the number of times I’ve listened to the song since it was put out. I think I’ll wait however and see if the song holds up after my initial infatuation subsides. In sticking to songs that have withstood the test of time, here is the third edition of my 1000 Minutes Adventure.

5. My Morning Jacket – The Way That He Sings (mp3) from At Dawn (5:36) [Time Remaining: 975:24]

I have several songs authored by My Morning Jacket that may or may not eventually be listed as a part of this, but this was the first song from the band that I absolutely loved. I saw the band live back in the Fall of 2002 well before they hit it big. They were one of the openers for a Doves show at Water Street. All I can remember is hearing this incredibly melodic and soulful music from a bunch of dudes who looked like they belonged in a death metal band. They were leaning forward banging their heads with their long hair and beards waving all about in time to music that didn’t fit their looks. I was hooked right from the beginning.

6. Idlewild – Mistake Pageant (mp3) from 100 Broken Windows (2:49) [Time Remaining: 972:35]

When all is said and done with these 1000 minutes I’m sure there will be several other songs taken from this particular Idlewild album as well as a few songs from the band’s later efforts. They are still one of my all time favorite bands and this song is pretty close to perfect in my opinion.

Phoenix

phonix band PhoenixToday has been interesting thus far. You can refer to our previous post concerning the matter of discussion. In getting back to good things we have a quick post on a band that shares names with a mythical creature that quite ostentatiously dies in flame and is reborn from its ashes. Consider this our Phoenix moment after being threatened.

The quartet from Versailles have a new album, their fourth, titled Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix due out the end of May. Download the lead single from the band directly here at the band’s site or below after some older tracks to get you in the mood.
