[mp3] Dear and The Headlights // Daysleeper

Dear and the Headlights [mp3] Dear and The Headlights // Daysleeper

I brought up Dear and The Headlights last week when I wrote about the Westchester, NY band Two States.  And in bringing them up, I went back to listen to their previous output and ran across this track from their demos that never showed up on either of the albums they released.

Dear and The Headlights always operated in a kind of faux-screamo place, where melodic ballads similar to this one are more commonplace.  But like was normally the case with the Phoenix band, they never came across as disingenuous – even when screaming over top of the music.  Do you remember what it was like to be 15 and misunderstood by everyone?  This would have been my favorite song from my favorite band back then.  And nowadays it’s still a pretty great song.

As for where the band is at this point, there doesn’t seem to be much news beyond passionate pleas from their fans on their Facebook page for a sign that they’re still making music together.  Maybe they’re working on something else, but it seems more like they’re on extended hiatus.  Whether it’s permanent remains to be seen.

Racvol2 [mp3] RAC Vol. 2

Of all the remixes and remix-ers that populate the music landscape, the most consistent amongst the many is RAC, or the Remix Artists Collective. They’ve presided over two mix-tapes of sorts, filled with remixes of various popular and unpopular artist’s track’s blended together to form an album. The first of these mixes included remixes for the likes of Bloc Party, Chromeo and Tokyo Police Club amongst others. The collective has also released a mini-mix and a great number of other remixes not included in these volumes, all of which are available for free with the exception of a few various cases for specific charitable causes. Grab a couple of the remixes below and head to the link to grab the rest.

Best of 2009: #5

wolfgang amadeus phoenix album cover Best of 2009: #55. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Andy : 8 :: Dave : 6

To say the least, 2009 must have been an interesting year for Phoenix. Including a stint on Saturday Night Live and sound-tracking a luxury car commercial, the band has finally made it into the collective consciousness of the American public despite having been around for some time. It’s possible to make the claim that this may not even be the best album the French quartet has released. But it certainly helps to have songs as catchy yet so incredibly good as ’1901′. When brand new fans of this record are lamenting that the song was sold for the aforementioned luxury car commercial, you know they’ve made an incredible impact.

Phoenix encapsulates multiple genres within the ten taut and impressive songs here, and nary a dud can be located. Almost without a doubt the most remixed album of the year, if you haven’t seen a ton of them you haven’t been looking. So, if you’ve been under a rock, make sure you listen to this before the remix record.

Remix Wednesday: Phoenix – 1901 (Build Remix)

m 1a342f0b607c43478f875e6571ed74fc Remix Wednesday: Phoenix 1901 (Build Remix)This is a remix I’ve had bouncing around since the beginning of March after “1901” was literally posted on that many blogs, including ours.  This particular remix is not as upbeat as the original track, but it’s equally as compelling.  Build’s take on the track is darker, understated, and does away with the pop elements of Phoenix’s version.  When played in succession, it shows just how versatile the track really is – which is undoubtedly why it’s one of the most remixed tracks of 2009.  (Is there another that comes close?  Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream?”  Maybe.)

Looking around the interwebs for info about the remixing artist, I discovered that the moniker “Build” has been retired in favor of much the much less hipster sounding “Shadows of Thunder” as of last week.  There are no tracks posted for Shadows of Thunder, but I kind of hope that it’s exclusively 80’s hair metal remixes.  Or maybe it’s the musical equivalent of this guy’s art.  Time will tell, I suppose.
