Sorry for the lack of posts yesterday, and for the brief nature of today’s. I guess both Andy and I needed a weekend to relax and refrain from writing following our show on Friday night. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the blog and the bands we brought in. We appreciate it. Anyhow…

We get an awful lot of tracks sent our way by Error Operator. I don’t believe we’ve used any thus far, but I was cleaning through old stuff in our inbox and came across this Passion Pit remix. They don’t do a whole lot to the song, using the stems liberally, and the structure of the song remains mostly in tact. Since it’s so similar to the original it still sounds pretty good, but it’s nothing drastically different than the original.

Another interesting cover has made its way from the minds and passions of Levi’s Pioneer Sessions in Passion Pit’s cover of a track originally authored by the favorite band of the groom in the wedding Andy and I are attending this weekend. How’s that for a terrible sentence? I have mixed feelings on Smashing Pumpkins in general. I greatly enjoy a large swath of their work, but don’t much care for its creators. I also like the original of this track, but the cover is a bit too saccharine for my tastes, and my usual toleration, nay, enjoyment, of Michael Angelakos’ vocals is completely absent. But I appreciate the effort and initiative once again from Levi’s.

Andy and I are toying with the idea of an all NXNE week on the blog in preparation and honor of the first music festival (I think) that either of us have been to. It will certainly be the first we have attended with press passes, so we are pretty excited about it. We haven’t fleshed out the details so keep your eyes peeled for what we may have for you.

In the meantime, if you’ve seen Passion Pit live recently you would know the band has been covering The Cranberries ‘Dreams’ so well at many of their concerts that they decided to include the cover on a reissue of Manners. The cover works better live for my ears, but it is still solid here regardless. I never knew how much I liked this song until I heard the Pit’s version. I can call them the Pit right?

Sam Billen Covers

This afternoon we have some covers for you from Sam Billen. Both tracks keep a fairly similar sound to the originals, each done in a bit more laid-back manner. You can get a few other from his covers album Removers at the link. It’s a work in progress – a cover a month – with other covers of the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Republic Tigers. I enjoy his take on the Postal Service track a bit more than I do that of the PP cover. I think this is because I like that original better, but either way check these out if you haven’t already.

Contest!: Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne in Niagara Falls, March 28th

passion pit manners Contest!: Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne in Niagara Falls, March 28th We’ve given away some things on the blog prior to now – a few albums or EPs on Amie Street last year, an album to our 100th fan on Facebook – but nothing of this magnitude: we have two tickets to the Passion Pit/Mayer Hawthorne concert in Niagara Falls on Sunday, March 28th to give away to a lucky reader.

First, some ground rules:

1. We won’t split the tickets up. Don’t ask.
2. You need to be able to meet on the day of the show – so, be willing to give us your phone number so we can get you the schwag outside the venue. I don’t want to mail the tickets to and have them be resold.
3. If you win, and it turns out you can’t make it, we ask that you please let us know so that someone else can use them.
4. We reserve the right to add any rule we haven’t yet thought of that might apply here.

Them’s the breaks. If you’re still in, here is how we’re going to play this:
