Tokyo Police Club sent an email around a few weeks back proclaiming their intent to cover 10 songs over 10 days, spanning 10 years history of contemporary music. I’ll admit it piqued my interest only slightly, because they didn’t exactly admit who and what they were covering. That they decided to cover far and away my favorite Jimmy Eat World song, and also decided to include Mike Angelakos from Passion Pit on vocals for it gave me a bit more pause. They chose a Moby cover for 2001, “Sweetness” for 2002, and announced a Strokes cover for 2003. The subsequent tracks have yet to be announced, so if you are interested keep checking in to see what they come up with.
As for the cover, I didn’t much care for it. The immediacy of the original is lacking here, and the nonsensical lyrics – masked by the intensity – are found lacking. Angelakos doesn’t add anything particularly important either. Now, this whole project is being done one day at a time – as in the band practices, records and mixes one song per day. I don’t know if a bit more work on this would change anything, but thus far it seems an exercise better in thought than in practice.
I’m certain you could find many more fans with a greater level of zeal towards Passion Pit if you spent a even a modicum of effort, so I suppose I should just say I really like them. Since the word go I’ve quite enjoyed a majority of what they’ve contributed musically (I don’t know much about what else they may contribute). At this point in my fan-dom, and in the absence of original music from them, I have gone to lengths as far as downloading each remix they produce in addition to giving every band that is compared to them a cursory chance. Thus far I’ve found a few of those similar bands to my liking and I’ve written about one such group in Strange Talk.
Yet relying upon mere comparisons to another band is dismissive and somewhat lazy, so I’ll try not to leave this description of one other such band at that. An Athens, Georgia based sexpopelectro act, Reptar have palpable energy in their synth driven guitar pop. I’ll use any excuse as a reason for listening to a band once; it’s the quality of the music that keeps me coming back and/or writing about them, and the quality is certainly evident here in this insanely catch tune. So throw on some clothes that remind you of Gossip Girl and act snarky towards someone before you then sleep with them, because this song will probably be featured on the show some time next week whilst the characters on the show do just that.
This is a track that has been floating about for a while. Many comparisons have been made to illustrious acts such as Passion Pit, Yeasayer and many more. I get a bit of a Cut Copy feel as well. See what major artist you can compare them to. Or don’t, just listen.
As you should be well aware by now, we here have neither the inclination – nor the time – to act as many other certain blogs do to be the first to post something. Case in point is that as of 9:48 PM E.T. this past Monday evening, 61 blogs had posted the new Fleet Foxes track. Posting the song before even listening to it in a slap-dash manner, just to be the first on HypeM, smacks of desperation to me. Andy was one of the first to mention the new track on Twitter, yet he declined to put it up immediately because he wanted to marinate in its qualities first. Like everyone else, we think our way of doing things is better. Except in our case, we’re right.
This track was used the other night on Chuck. We’ve written admirably about the show’s sound editor previously, and whomever it is has been back on their game lately after a bit of a lull. While it was playing on the show, I recognized the song and soon realized I already had the track on my computer. I had listened to it a few times but didn’t think much about it apparently because I hadn’t even bothered to give it a rating. It’s certainly catchy enough, and the band has a certain, how you say, Passion Pit-ness to them? So, we aren’t the first to post this song, but it’s still worthy of a shout.
Here’s my first entry for our new In Brief series. I don’t have a lot to say about this track but I figured I would briefly mention the latest Cold War Kids release. Andy didn’t seem to think much of Mine Is Yours. While it’s certainly not as good as their own Robbers & Cowards, I think I may prefer it at this point to Loyalty to Loyalty. Then again I’ve only listened to it once. This remix has seen its way across the interweb and back, finding itself here at Tympanogram for those who may have missed it during its many travels.

Basically, it sounded like a cool name for a blog intended to be primarily about music. We’d both had other blogs previously, but over beers it was decided that more damage could be done as a joint venture. And here we are.
We share a passion for the undiscovered and under-appreciated, and hope that you’ll be able to find something you love as well.

I like music. I can't describe how I came to like the music I do, because I don't know how or why, I just do.
Many years ago, Napoleon's brother, my great-great-great-great-great-great Grandfather, came to America. He was asked his name on Ellis Island while being processed as an immigrant. Not understanding English, he was under the impression that he was being asked how he had arrived in the new land. So he turned around and pointed at the sea vessel and said, 'LaBarge.'

I come by my music taste of my own free will. My friends listened to 2Pac, my parents to contemporary Christian and me? Sunny Day Real Estate. I can’t explain it.
