[video] Miike Snow // Paddling Out

Miike Snow’s new album, Happy To You, isn’t due out for another six weeks or so, but that hasn’t stopped them from releasing a trio of tracks from it already. They put together this completely nonsensical video for “Paddling Out,” in which a guy is having a hell of a hangover hallucination and imagines himself dancing, being blasted by extraterrestrial ray guns, flying in outer space, etc. If that’s what Banana Juice does to a person, consider me not interested.

Happy To You is out on March 27th.

miike snow devils work [stream] Miike Snow // Devils Work

I’ve had this new track from Miike Snow on my personal back burner for a couple of days at this point, and when I went to listen to the song this morning on Soundcloud, I saw that it had pushed up over 90,000 listens within three days of being released to the world. Seems like the music buying public is ready for a sophomore effort from the Stockholm trio, or the band has some completely obsessed fans.

The band’s first effort ended up being a bit uneven for me; the songs that were good were REALLY good, and the rest of it fell sort of flat. Dave and I, surprisingly, both put it at #31 on our Best Albums of 2009, but with weighting, it ended up at #34 on the overall list. Thinking back two years, that ranking seems appropriate. It’s not an album I listen to often at this point, listening to the high points, if anything.

This new track, from the band’s upcoming 2012 release, is called “Devil’s Work.” It’s not a departure from the style the band established on their debut, but it’s got a darker ambiance to it – a nod to the song’s title, I suppose. It’s a nice re-introduction to their music – especially when the vocals get heavier around the chorus parts, and the beat builds around it. It’s a cool sound, and it’s more than enough to make me want to listen again.

There’s a film accompaniment that’s available for viewing over at the band’s website as well. Lots of running.

Best of 2009: 34 & 33

miike snow Best of 2009: 34 & 3334. Miike Snow – Miike Snow
Andy: 31 :: Dave: 31

There’s something to be said for Swedish pop; between Robyn (now rumored to be working with Diplo) and Miike Snow, the socialist Scandinavian nation has produced two recent hits (and Jose Gonzalez).  Miike Snow’s eponymous debut expands and contracts – incorporating accessible guitar/piano over synthesized beats.

It’s an album meant to be consumed as a whole; there are a couple of missteps, but the better songs more than make up for the mistakes.  It’s not particularly challenging; it’s straightforward, upbeat electro-pop.  And if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ve found it.

mosdeff Best of 2009: 34 & 3333. Mos Def – The Ecstatic
Andy: 21 :: Dave: Unranked

When I first heard it, I told a friend of mine that The Ecstatic was Mos Def’s Bitches Brew.  Thinking back on it now, that seems hyperbolic, but the meaning behind it still rings true: The Ecstatic – in spite of (or more likely because of) how groundbreaking it could prove to be – probably won’t ever be fully appreciated.  It isn’t filled with Top 40 hooks, the next dance move or an affinity for materialism.

It is, conversely, layered with enough samples and sounds to reward repeated listens.  In an era where music has become something disposable, or simply something to be accumulated without appreciation, Mos Def’s attention to detail here is truly something to take in.

mp3 Smörgåsbord #29

67408620 6b8f5fdc63 mp3 Smörgåsbord #29This week’s Smörgåsbord is a little bit different than most weeks, but only because we’re not featuring three straight remixes.  Instead, we’re serving up an acoustic Mike Doughty track that was recorded in a Subway in NYC, another track off of the Miike Snow album, and a little cover of a song you may know.  Dig in before it gets cold.

Thursday Samples

mars Thursday SamplesHere are some completely different songs I’ve come across recently that have intrigued me. I don’t quite know what I feel about the Owl City song just yet, but I like the Miike Snow song a fair bit already. The Owl City song gives me a weird vibe I can’t put my finger on. No one ever responds to this question but…any thoughts?
