Out ahead of his upcoming fall tour, Mayer Hawthorne has released a new track. On “No Strings,” the purveyor of indie soul has dropped – at least for this song – the retro vibe that made his debut album such a revelation last year. Instead of boasting the horn section that was so prominent on A Strange Arrangement, “No Strings” is produced far more than it should be, and it ends up feeling sterile, despite the fervid nature of the lyrics.
I’m not saying it’s not enjoyable in its own way, however. If there’s one thing that Hawthorne does well, it’s craft spirited, sing-along tracks, and this is no exception to that. Unfortunately, it’s also devoid of much of the qualities that made me enjoy him in the first place. If this is the direction he’s planning on heading in the future, then consider me much less of a fan.

Mayer Hawthorne – No Strings (mp3)
I’m going to again skip the New Releases post because there’s nothing particularly interesting out today. If you absolutely need some direction, the Animal Collective DVD is out today. I guess you could start there.
We’ve given away some things on the blog prior to now – a few albums or EPs on Amie Street last year, an album to our 100th fan on Facebook – but nothing of this magnitude: we have two tickets to the Passion Pit/Mayer Hawthorne concert in Niagara Falls on Sunday, March 28th to give away to a lucky reader.
We want some love
