Josh Rouse – Parts and Accessories

cd cover Josh Rouse Parts and AccessoriesSo the new Josh Rouse album comes out next week, and I find myself going back to some of his older albums, catching the easygoing vibe all over again.  I’ve somehow, somewhere lost my copy of Under Cold Blue Stars Josh Rouse Parts and Accessories (which is the album after the one this song is on, but is my favorite of his), and that’s making my personal listening party a little bit incomplete.  I’ll have to repurchase it.

This is one of my favorite Josh Rouse tracks; it’s been repeating itself on my iTunes, making what will probably be a stressful week a little bit easier.  It’s quiet and pretty, and reminds me of a late summer evening with the windows open, a light rain just starting to fall.  But, when I look outside my own window, it looks like that type of weather may never come again.  I’ll keep holding out hope.

Winter in New York

snowfall measure 2009 12 09 Winter in New YorkWith the week in New Releases being slow, I don’t have anything new to talk about this morning; instead, I’ll talk about what’s been on my mind, and certainly the minds of others recently: winter.  I’ve had to brush my car off each morning before work, and evening after work all week. (I was off last week, but I had to brush it off then as well.)  It sucks.

With that in mind, I figured I’d send out some wintry vibes this morning – no Snow Patrol or Miike Snow since those are too easy, but I’m hopeful there are a couple of things that might be new.

Further Seems Forever – Snowbirds and Townies (mp3) from The Moon is Down Winter in New York

This was Chris Carrabba before Dashboard Confessional.  He doesn’t sound entirely different from what Dashboard has recently become, but he’s far more popular with the tweens now than he was back then.  Further Seems Forever tried to keep going without him – in fact, maybe they still are trying – but that hasn’t worked out so well to my knowledge.

Joshua Radin – Winter (mp3) from First Between 3rd & 4th Winter in New York

After hearing it on the saddest Scrubs episode ever (Season 3, when Jordan’s brother dies), Joshua Radin’s website contained a link to this song, and that was pretty much it.  And I downloaded it, and burned it onto a CD twenty times in a row.  That was undoubtedly excessive; I think I made it through 5 at once before I couldn’t handle it anymore.  I still don’t listen to it much; it’s still upsetting.

Josh Rouse – Snowfall (mp3) from Country Mouse Companion Winter in New York

This instrumental is best when you don’t have to go back out into the weather and can just watch the accumulation pile up on your car, yard, street.  You know, the times when it actually looks nice when it’s snowing, and it’s not a complete pain in the ass.

Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 2

Today we continue our look at some of our favorite EPs from the past year; we’ve got one more of these set for tomorrow as well.

Animal Collective Fall Be Kind EP Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 2Animal Collective – Fall Be Kind

As if 2009 wasn’t busy enough for AnCo, their Fall Be Kind EP was released at the end of November.  (The EP, interestingly, contains the first licensed sample of The Grateful Dead on “What Would I Want? Sky.”)  It’s signature Animal Collective – space-y, psychedelic rock that’s cementing them a place at laser light shows across the nation twenty years from now when our kids are getting stoned.

Since their move away from Barsuk, reviews of Death Cab’s material has gone steadily downward.  It may just be coincidental, but the indie goodwill they’d built up prior seems to have been waning.  With The Open Door, the band released a few of the tracks from the Narrow Stairs sessions.  A little less produced and polished than what ended up making the cut for that album, the songs sound much better.

After a quiet couple of years, Josh Rouse took the unconventional route with his recent Valencia EP.  Comprised of the leftovers from his forthcoming LP, Valencia is an excellent pre-cursor to what should be an excellent album.  It’s upbeat, influenced by his current residency in Spain, and warms up the long winter nights with hints of the impending spring.

1000 Minutes: Dave #32

1000 Minutes: Dave #32I’m in catch up mode, so I figured now might be the best time to use what duplicates the two of us may have come up with between our two 1K lists thus far. Obviously Andy and I will have some similar favorites. Today I will include two of my favorites that have already been represented on his list.

65. Jeff Buckley – Last Goodbye (mp3) from Grace 1000 Minutes: Dave #32 (4:32) [Time Remaining: 739:54]

There is not much I can add to the conversation about this wonderfully talented artist taken well before his time, so I will only briefly discuss my experience with this song. I have loved this song nearly my entire music listening life. Released when I was a pre-teen, the power and beauty of this song were not lost on such a young listener.

66. Josh Rouse – Winter in the Hamptons (mp3) from Nashville 1000 Minutes: Dave #32 (3:08) [Time Remaining: 736:46]

Josh Rouse’s voice is never finer, in my opinion, than in this song and on the entire record. For me however, the timing of this song may have been more appropriate back in the spring. Much like Andy stated when he wrote about the song, listening to it is great fodder for wishing our long Rochester winters away.

Finally, as a bonus for today I am attaching this song, because I messed up and didn’t post it correctly when I initially put up the edition of my 1K that included it back in July. It is song number forty-three in my list but the song was never picked up. So here it is again.

Josh Rouse – Magdalena

Josh Rouse 3V Josh Rouse Magdalena

My apologies for putting up another post without the song file attached.  I’ve been kind of sick the past couple of days, so my head’s in a fog.  I promise to be more attentive from now on.  Let’s get into it:

It’s been a while since Josh Rouse released a proper album.  He’s stayed quiet on the full-length front since 2007’s Country Mouse, City House Josh Rouse Magdalena, releasing a couple EPs through his label, Bedroom Classics, and he’s also been keeping up a cool rarities thing on his website where he releases something the first of each month.  (That looks to be down now, however, through the end of the year.)

This coming Tuesday he’s releasing a new EP entitled Valencia before his new album, El Turista, which is set for release in February 2010.  From what I can gather, these will be tracks that missed the cut for the new album, but don’t take that as gospel.

“Magdalena” has an Ocean’s 11/12/13 soundtrack type of musical vibe to it.  It’s a dance-y, sexy number that seems influenced by Josh’s current residency in Spain.  Let me put things in quick perspective: if this is what missed the cut, El Turista is going to be something to look forward to.
