[mp3/Best of 2010] Dave’s 111 Favorite Songs of 2010

Best of 2010 [mp3/Best of 2010] Daves 111 Favorite Songs of 2010

For those of you unaware, my wife had a baby four hours after the new year rang in on the East Coast. I have been away from the blog since that time, thus the incredible lateness of this particular post topic. For this post, the difficulty was not in fact regarding writing, but instead the actual compiling of my list. That shit takes time. While I’m certainly under no illusions that I’ve heard every song this year that is worthy of mention on a ‘best of’ list, it is the reason I am once again compiling a list of the songs I’ve come across in this year that I deemed my favorites. Once again I have included 111, because that was a number I was comfortable with last year, and 113 this year seemed silly. This order is also semi-ridiculous, meaning it has already changed its order since I wrote it initially, but as long as these tracks are included it’s fine. Due to my lack of time this is also not stylized to my content, so I apologize for its bland appearance.

Thank you to everyone for the well wishes regarding the new addition to my family, either here, on Facebook or on Twitter, I appreciate it. I’ve chosen a few various mp3′s to include, so let’s get into it.

[mp3] Teen Daze – Wet Hair (Japandroids Cover)

Teen Daze My Bedroom Floor Cover [mp3] Teen Daze Wet Hair (Japandroids Cover)

This interesting cover has been floating around for a few months now, but I just came across it yesterday.  It’s recent buzzy chillwave artist Teen Daze covering fellow Vancouver residents Japandroids’ “Wet Hair.”  Post-Nothing, Japandroids’ 2009 debut, was one of my favorites from last year, and this track was a favorite from that album.

Teen Daze has taken out all the driving guitar that the original boasted and replaced it with synths and computer-generated noises – and it’s still just as much fun.  I know Japandroids are a divisive duo; they are certainly not for everyone (or, anyone who I know because none of my friends seem to like them), but Teen Daze makes this one a bit more accessible for the masses.

It’s fitting that we’re talking about this today because Teen Daze has released a brand new LP today entitled My Bedroom Floor, which you can grab over at his Bandcamp page.

[mp3] Best Songs of 2010 (Twitter Poll)

Twitter Icon [mp3] Best Songs of 2010 (Twitter Poll)We’re not going to a do a Best Songs list of our own here (I don’t think).  It’s more difficult to make a cohesive album than it is to make a single song, so it seems more fitting to talk about the artists that we believe did that well.  But, that doesn’t mean we’re immune to talking about what people think are the best songs of the year, so we went straight to our friends on Twitter for their insight.

The query was this: (W)hat’s the best song you’ve heard this year? (make it a 2010 song. hearing “God Only Knows” doesn’t count.)

Following are the responses, in no particular order, with mp3s where we can and links to listen to the picks where we can’t. (We’ve also linked to the respective tweets so you can harass the voters for their poor taste if you deem it necessary.)  Thanks to everyone for their contributions!

[mp3] Japandroids – Heavenward Grand Prix

Japandroids [mp3] Japandroids Heavenward Grand PrixThe latest in their series of limited 7” vinyl singles, Japandroids are releasing a mid-tempo burner as the A-Side, with a cover of PJ Harvey’s “Shame” on the reverse.  If you weren’t aware, the Vancouver duo is onto the third in their series of tracks that didn’t make last year’s excellent Post-Nothing, and pairing them each up with a cover.  (If memory serves me correctly, this is a planned series of 5.)  To this point, they’ve released one of my favorite songs of the year in “Younger Us,” which was the second single.

Above the constant guitar churn, the A-Side – “Heavenward Grand Prix” – chugs along toward the finish line, telling the tale of a couple trying to find their own way, getting the fuck out of town, starting things over again.

The single is available for pre-order right now over at Polyvinyl Records.  For $5 you too can own one too.  This one ships around the middle of November, although with the first two, I received my copies well before the release date.  It’s limited to 2000 copies on clear vinyl, so grab it before soon.  If you don’t have a record player, the single will be released digitally as well.

[mp3/mix] Tympanogram Summer Mix: post-spring

mix cover [mp3/mix] Tympanogram Summer Mix: post spring

It’s been a long time coming, really.  This is our very first mix in all our long months of existence.  We’ve talked about the vast majority of these tracks at one point or another here on the blog, but we’ve arranged them in such a way as to produce maximum listening pleasure.  (That’s not a lie.  I’ve had this on repeat for about 2 weeks now.)  You can get each track individually if you want to, or there’s a convenient zip file at the bottom if you just want to get them all in one shot.

Leave some love if you’re feeling up to it.  Leave some hatred for leaving off a good song.  Just get outside with some cold beverages, good friends and this mix.  Turn it up loud.  Do some daydrinking.  Enjoy the rest of the summer.
