Andy usually does the new releases list, though he hasn’t done it quite so often lately. I can see why; it’s a laborious job sorting through much of the dregs released in a particular week to find something, nay, sometimes anything, that would be of interest. As such, please forgive me if I’ve missed anything near and dear to your heart. It isn’t personal.
Luckily this week there is the new Interpol, though I’ve heard it isn’t much good, and then there is The Thermals new record, so there are some things I know I will likely get. Besides that you would be hard pressed to find me getting anything else off this week’s list other than perhaps the new Jukebox the Ghost. Then again I didn’t scour the entire list, so there may be a gem in there somewhere I missed. There are also new records from Sara Bareilles and Robyn, as well as from some artists I have never, nor will ever, listen to.

Robyn – Include Me Out (mp3) from Body Talk Pt. 2
Interpol – Barricade (mp3) from Interpol
What better way to begin a day than with some new Interpol? Staying true to the theme of brooding, slow builders, the track is vintage Interpol. The band has stated on their next effort they would be attempting to make their own Kid A. Whether or not they hit the mark remains to be told. In the meantime grab the track here, or get it directly from them using the widget above.

Not that I’m getting to the point where I need to choose other songs off of favorite albums, not by any means whatsoever, but that’s what I’ve done today. If you’re new to the site, here is what this is all about.
58. Idlewild – Idea Track (mp3) from 100 Broken Windows (3:13) [Time Remaining: 763:41]
Idlewild is a favorite band of mine almost solely based on the strength of this album. I have enjoyed their subsequent records, but very few albums – by Idlewild or otherwise – will ever be able to measure up to 100 Broken Windows. This song has lyrics that are slightly nonsensical, yet poetic. Once again, as usually is the case for me, it is the conjunction of the music and the vocals that make the song a highlight. The harmonies and guitar work mesh so lovely together. Everything comes together perfectly to form a beautiful three minutes. Even the barely audible poem recitation in the background adds to what is an amazing song.
59. Interpol – PDA (mp3) from Turn On The Bright Lights (5:00) [Time Remaining: 758:41]
This song is all about Daniel Kessler’s guitar. Much like all other Interpol tracks, the lyrics are deliberately (or perhaps not) obtuse. Written about the end of a relationship where the narrator believes a portion of the blame should be placed on his former partner; I don’t relate much to what is actually being said. The bridge is fantastic, and it’s really the music – not the lyrics – along with the harmonies towards the end that sweep me into an imaginary world where the actual lyrics are nothing close to what I imagine the band is trying to convey. I guess I’m just not much of a lyrics analyzer and focus more on what songs mean to me instead.
This is one of the stronger weeks for new music that I’ve seen. I’ll personally get the Modest Mouse EP – which has been released prior to this in a series of limited 7-inch singles, the Yim Yames EP (which, if you don’t know, is a thinly veiled penname for the lead singer of My Morning Jacket) and the Julian Plenti album. I already have the Japandroids disc, which is excellent, but I believe this week it finally sees its physical release on the band’s new label.
And, a very happy 30th birthday to my friend Brian. I’ll be down to celebrate soon.
Have a happy week of listening. Like we always do, there are a couple tracks to whet your collective whistles after the list.
Modest Mouse – No One’s First and You’re Next
Japandroids – Post-Nothing
Yim Yames – Tribute To
Julian Plenti – …Is Skyscraper
Medeski, Martin & Wood – Radiolarians III
Catie Curtis – Hello Stranger
Antony and The Johnsons – Aeon (Single)
Fruit Bats – Ruminant Band
Throw Me the Statue – Creaturesque
[Have we missed something you were looking forward to? Amazon has a more complete list.]
Modest Mouse – Perpetual Motion Machine (mp3) from the forthcoming No One’s First and You’re Next
Yim Yames – My Sweet Lord (mp3) from the forthcoming Tribute To
Japandroids – Wet Hair (mp3) from Post-Nothing
We call it the Smörgåsbord, but normally it plays out like remix and/or b-side junction. Today will be no different. Chomp down hard on a sublime Interpol remix before challenging your taste buds on another remix, this time of an Au Revoir Simone ditty. Finally wash it all down with a delicious meal in itself, an RAC Bloc Party mix. Eat up clowns.
Interpol – Untitled (Velapene Screen remix) (mp3)
Au Revoir Simone – Sad Song (Pacific remix) (mp3) from Reverse Migration
Bloc Party – Hunting For Witches (RAC mix) (mp3)
