[mp3] Robin Pecknold // Three Songs EP

Fleet Foxes whet our collective folky appetites back in January when they released their fantastic track “Helplessness Blues.” Since then, there’s been a fair amount of excitement in various camps about forthcoming material (and I hadn’t even – somehow – got ’round to listening to their debut album before now. My bad.)

What we’ve got here isn’t exactly Fleet Foxes, but it will certainly do! Frontman and chief beardmonger Robin Pecknold has released a surprise EP of three songs entitled… Three Songs. One of the lovable things about Fleet Foxes is their stripped back approach, so you’ve gotta give the guy credit here. And the EP is incredibly stripped back – it’s just Pecknold and his guitar, aside from a ghostly appearance by Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear.

This appearance is on the first track, the melancholy “I’m Losing Myself”. The track is simple and sorrowful, Pecknold chiming “I’m a slow mover,” lamenting himself, before Ed Droste drifts in with a beautiful yet subtle harmony behind him like some transient, pastoral spectre.

Second track “Derwentwater Stones” has Nick Drake written all over it in big, folky, green letters. The finger picking is sublime, the strings chiming and plucking in a fantastic interplay with Pecknold’s voice.

The final track “Where Is My Wild Rose?” sounds even simpler and more restrained than its predecessors and boasts a simply gorgeous chord progression, which perfectly underscores Pecknold’s lyrics about a lost love.

This EP doesn’t signal a new and ambitious solo career which will hold back new Fleet Foxes material however. Pecknold has said these are just “pretty cool jams” he felt like releasing because he couldn’t find any other place for them. That’s a wonderful attitude to have; it’s always refreshing to see artists putting out material regularly for their fans’ enjoyment. The EP really is a simple, tranquil listen, something you can wrap yourself up in; and it’s strong reminder that Robin Pecknold is one hell of a songwriter.

[mp3] Gamble House – Second to None

Due to some work on the Twitter, Andy somehow finagled us into involvement with the September issue of Hype Machine Radio. As it turned out, it was I who spoke with Dev, and for a fair bit of time via Skype. I generally proceeded to ramble incoherently. My hopes rest on he and his producer having excellent editing skills in efforts to avoid making me sound as moronic as I undoubtedly did. I wait in anticipation for September’s edition to be released.

The song I chose for said radio show was Gamble House’s “Second to None.” I wrote about Gamble House and their track “Bonny Doon” a while back. At the time I mentioned their similarity to Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, in particular because of the vocals of Dan Rossen. Unfortunately, this was one of the few descriptive utterances I could manage in my nerves during my talk with Dev; I must have said the same thing ten times. That, and that I liked the vocals. The entire album is comprised of bountiful 60′s pop tune sounds and “Second to None” is no exception. Blessed with a simmering glockenspiel and soaring, layered-at-times vocals, it’s a gorgeous example of Gamble House and Ben Becker’s personal work. There is certainly a reason vocals was the first thing that came to my mind, I only wish I could have said more descriptive things about it on Hype Radio.

Be on the lookout in the coming days for the September edition of Hype Machine Radio, and enjoy “Second to None” in the meantime.

[mp3] New Releases: July 20

new release pic1 [mp3] New Releases: July 20I haven’t done a straight New Releases post in a while, so I figured I would start getting back into it.  Certainly there is a lot more that comes out each week than just what we put down here, so make sure to check things out for yourselves as well.  This is really more of an exercise in what has some name recognition and/or what we’re looking forward to hearing.  This week there isn’t much to get excited about, really – other than the Japandroids 7″ (which is awesome) and whatever else you might be into.

As always, there are a couple of tracks after the list for you to get you in the mood for music buying.  We hope everyone’s week is going well to this point, and that you find something you like.

[mp3] Gamble House – Bonny Doon

While browsing around the interwebs, I came across this track on I Guess I’m Floating. I hadn’t heard of the band prior, but my interest was piqued when I read their write-up concerning a favorable comparison to Grizzly Bear, Dan Rossen in particular. As for what I wrote about Rossen yesterday, this comparison would be most enticing to me. Luckily for me, the comparison is apt.

When writing up new music it is often quite easy to throw in a band name people might be familiar with, that would compare to some new work in efforts to give it perspective. I might never have listened to this song otherwise, so for that I am grateful to the guys over at IGIF. I truly hope this same sort of thing happens for people with our write-ups.

The band is currently out on tour supporting Rogue Wave. While I haven’t gotten my hands on the entire Gamble House LP just yet, that failure should be remedied quickly.

[mp3] Department of Eagles – While We’re Young

[mp3] Department of Eagles While Were Young
Dan Rossen makes music that seems to be suited specifically for my ears. More so than any other artist I can think of, besides Bradford Cox, Rossen crafts tunes that almost universally hit whatever nerve necessary to reach the apex of my iTunes play counts. I was a little slow on the uptake with both Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, but I’m fully immersed in both projects now. Upon hearing the following new track from the forthcoming collection of tracks the band wrote but neglected to include in 2008′s exceptional In Ear Park [mp3] Department of Eagles While Were Young, my awe of Rossen only increased. This bright track is of the style of Grizzly Bear track I adore most; composed of lush arrangements and woo-ooh’s, set to the trademark jittery guitars topped off with a pleasing beat. I can’t gush enough.
