 Best of 2009: 26 & 2526. Fanfarlo – Reservoir
Andy: 15 :: Dave: Unranked

When listening to Fanfarlo’s debut album, Reservoir, it feels as though the band is constantly on the verge of something far more grand.  That’s not intended to make the album sound like a disappointment, because it is anything but.  It’s a melodic, poppy release that often descends (ascends?) into expansive, flighty jams, and is one that shows a lot of a promise for a relatively young band.

It’d be easy to label them as a kind of bastard offspring of David Byrne and Arcade Fire, but Fanfarlo’s take on chamber pop retains an air of individuality.  Reservoir stomps and soars and slows to a crawl, waving the flags of their influences proudly.  While that may brand the group unoriginal to some, Reservoir is as weighty as what they draw upon, and is a wholly enjoyable experience.

dan auerbach keep it hid 2009 Best of 2009: 26 & 2525. Dan Auerbach – Keep It Hid
Andy: 12 :: Dave: Unranked

Dan Auerbach’s general singing snarl is dressed up a bit on Keep It Hid, his first venture into solo territory.  (Fellow Keys member Patrick Carney also had a non-Keys release this year as well as a part of the aptly named band Drummer, but I didn’t buy that one.)  Keep It Hid is more a vehicle for Auerbach’s guitar than vox, however, and he pairs it up with additional textures, tempos and times.  The resulting album is a bluesy, southern success.

Auerbach can go from primal to comforting and back again in the span of three songs, and each sounds equally as natural as the other.  He’s at his best when he sticks to the straightforward rock, but it’s encouraging to hear him expand on the work he’s been doing for the past decade with The Black Keys.

New Releases: October 13

 New Releases: October 13There are a few releases I’m personally excited to hear this week – the long awaited album from The Temper Trap, the new one from The Flaming Lips and the new Josh Rouse EP (if you didn’t read it yesterday, we posted a track from it). Also, if you don’t have it, get the Fanfarlo album, because it’s excellent as well. I don’t exactly know why it’s being “released” this week since it’s been on iTunes since March at least, but that doesn’t particularly matter. Now’s your chance.

We hope you find something you can love, and if you need encouraging, there are a couple of tracks to help you decide after the list. Have a great week everyone.

mp3 Smörgåsbord #25

lobster mp3 Smörgåsbord #25Put your disposable lobster bib on for today’s Smörgåsbord.  Personally, I had enough lobster this past week or so, and I don’t even like it.  Honestly, on the whole it seems like far too much work for what is ultimately very little reward.  But, for you crustacean lovers, we have a brand new, fresh from the musical ocean remix of So Many Dynamos, as well as an understated remix of The Radio Dept. from The Rice Twins, and then some Fanfarlo.  We ran out of those little forks, so good luck getting the meat out.

Quick Takes on a Saturday Morning

toast 2 Quick Takes on a Saturday Morning1. Dave and I came across this website yesterday with a familiar feel to it.

2. We talked with Wes from Ra Ra Riot after their (excellent) show last night, and we’re working on writing it up.  I’d look for that tomorrow or Monday.

3. I’ve been listening a lot to this band called Fanfarlo lately.  They have an Arcade Fire, David Byrne vocal kind of thing going on.  And, the album is only $6 on iTunes.  Can’t go wrong there.

4. So Many Dynamos was the first act to play last night – we thought it was going to be Passion Pit, but they apparently couldn’t make it.  About the band’s first couple songs, I wrote “poor man’s At the Drive In” and “less melodic We Are Scientists.”  But then they played “In Every Direction” and everything turned around.  The second half of their set was very good.  They’re self-depricating, unafraid, and well aware of the hype machine that goes into making a band these days.  But, when I look it up, Pitchfork gave them a 7.3 for their last album, not a 5.3 like they told the crowd, and even a bit higher than Pitchfork rated music as a whole.  They have a new album coming soon, and what they played from it sounded great.
