Albums of the Year: Part Two

thumbs up Albums of the Year: Part TwoCongrats to Ryan for our favorite answer in regards to Amie Street Giveaway #3. His copy will be gifted shortly. Stay tuned next week for our next giveaway.

Living in a list-loving society and it being nearly the half-way point of the year, lots of folks are listing the best records of the year so far. We’ve already done it here but I wanted to add my two cents to the so called best-of for 2009. So grab yourself a bunch of crap if you don’t already have it and enjoy.

Andy already mentioned Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear. It’s all very preliminary and I haven’t thought about it much, but on my own personal list the Grizzly Bear record is high up there, M.P.P. probably isn’t that high up and I’m holding out for the time being on D.P.’s very recent release. Without over thinking it I would have to add the excellent Pains of Being Pure at Heart record to my list somewhere, along with the new Doves and Passion Pit. I’ve enjoyed several others I could add, but those three I felt were my necessary additions to the conversation, even if they don’t make my official year-end list.

So he are my favorites off those three ’09 records, along with an extra song off Veckatimest.

Passion Pit – Folds In Your Hands (mp3) from Manners

Grizzly Bear – Fine For Now (mp3) from Veckatimest

Doves – Kingdom of Rust (mp3) from Kingdom of Rust

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart – Young Adult Friction (mp3) from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

1000 Minutes: Dave #1

deserted island 1000 Minutes: Dave #1If I were to envision myself as Hurley from Lost, having recently suffered a catastrophic event and finding myself on a deserted island with an mp3 player, what music would I listen to? Similar to Hurley’s situation in that I can’t get any new music but different because my batteries will never run out, what music will comprise this final playlist? I have exactly 1000 minutes of music for all of eternity, or until death. This vision takes the liberty to assume there is a fair amount of leisure time to sit on my ass not worrying about staying alive.

The list is not going to be in any particular order. Here are two songs I would need.

1. Doves – The Cedar Room (mp3) from Lost Souls (7:38) [Time Remaining: 992:22]

Best song from one of my favorite bands. I can listen to this and never get sick of it. And that is the entire point of this exercise.

2. Bran Van 3000 – Drinking In L.A. (mp3) from Glee (3:56) [Time Remaining: 988:26]

If Andy is being far more hopeful of the location of his deserted island and I was perhaps stranded in a frigid wasteland it might be prudent to mention I wouldn’t last long enough to listen to each and every song let alone be concerned with music. If I were to end up in such a nightmare then I would like this song for the escapism. That and I fucking love it.
