New Releases: April 20

 New Releases: April 20Welcome to the week’s New Releases, in its new home on Tuesdays.  Since we’re in the US, we get our new stuff today.  If you’re reading this elsewhere, we might look a little bit outdated.

As for releases, there doesn’t seem to be much that’s compelling for us today beyond the Caribou release; Dave is a Doves fan, so he might be interested in their Best of since there are a couple of new tracks mixed in; beyond that, there’s the Rufus Wainwright and the Kate Nash releases.  I may check out the new one from The Radio Dept. as well.  It’s really your call this week.  Go with what you love and you can’t go wrong.

There are a few tracks like always.  Have an excellent week.

1000 Minutes: Dave #43

 1000 Minutes: Dave #43Here is my complete list to this point.

87. Doves – Pounding from The Last Broadcast 1000 Minutes: Dave #43 (4:45) [Time Remaining: 642:30]

The words to describe just how I feel about this record – as well as about this band in general – are hard to come by. I’ve already included ‘There Goes The Fear’ from The Last Broadcast in my 1K, and a few other songs from it may eventually make their way into this list. The driving beat in this song will never grow old and the simple rhythm guitars are just wonderful in composing the melody of the tune. ‘Pounding’ is about fleeting moments, and making the most of the time you have. I can’t think of a better way to make the most of my time than by listening to music from this incredible band.

88. The Roots – The Seed (2.0) Ft Cody Chesnutt from Phrenology 1000 Minutes: Dave #43 (4:28) [Time Remaining: 638:02]

If somehow you find yourself unaware, this song is technically a cover. The man whose lovely voice you hear in the chorus and playing the pleasing guitars is Cody Chesnutt, the original author of this song. The Roots essentially reworked the song a bit and upped the tempo, but it is kept mostly intact from Chesnutt’s original. Delightfully seedy in lyrical content, this is just an immensely satisfying song.

1000 Minutes: Andy #41

 1000 Minutes: Andy #41I’ve been enamored with the new-ish Mos Def/Talib Kweli video “History” since seeing it over at Wine & Bowties, which is an excellent blog, by the way.  It’s quicker than we are – several posts per day regarding anything that the authors deem worthy.  Anyway, there’s something about that track I can’t take in, and the video fits it perfectly.  That has nothing to do with my 1000 Minutes post for this week, which sees me getting close to filling 400 of my allotted minutes.  Let’s get into it.

83. Doves – Black and White Town (mp3) from Some Cities 1000 Minutes: Andy #41 (4:15) [Time Remaining: 610:21]

Out of the two of us, Dave is obviously the bigger fan of Doves – based on the fact that he has two of their songs on his own 1000 Minutes list, as well as his ranking of their 2009 album on his personal best of the year list.  That’s not to say that I dislike Doves; I just don’t respond to them in the same way.  In fact, Some Cities – the album “Black and White Town” is on – was given to me by Dave.

“Black and White Town,” the first single from Some Cities, grabbed my attention immediately.  It’s upbeat, atmospheric sound propelled it to the UK Top 10 after its release in 2005, and it’s been in my personal rotation since I heard it.  I run to it (when I get around to doing that), drive to it, drink to it.  It’s a multi-purpose song that enhances any task – regardless of how menial it might be.  And while I don’t attach it to any specific time or memory, its impression is equally as lasting.

84. Sufjan Stevens – Chicago (mp3) from Illinoise 1000 Minutes: Andy #41 (6:05) [Time Remaining: 604:16]

If I could choose where to have been born, it undoubtedly would have been Chicago.  Despite my love for the Mets, I can handle New York only in small doses, but when I’ve been to Chicago, the feeling has been entirely different.  From the Art Institute to architecture boat tours to a trip through the buildings on the Brown Line, I can’t say enough about it.

Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago” is equally as vibrant and welcoming – at least to me.  It’s a song to escape to and escape with; its love affair with the open road and change isn’t uncommon in American music or culture, but there is hardly another song that I so easily identify with – and so strongly at that.

Best of 2009: 24 & 23

doveskingdomofrust Best of 2009: 24 & 2324. Doves – Kingdom of Rust
Andy: Unranked :: Dave: 12

Doves write driving songs. I’m not specifically referring to beats, though oftentimes there happen to be a plethora of driving beats moving Doves music along. What I mean is you can imagine the band driving through austere landscapes contemplating all of life’s mysteries as they conceptualize their music. Listen to the titular Kingdom of Rust and see what I mean. Personally, I love listening to Doves as I drive long distances. And perhaps that is part of why the band gets very little mainstream love. They are in it for the long haul, making consistently excellent music, avoiding any gimmicks or shite to get famous and instead focusing on perfecting their craft.

With Kingdom of Rust the band does not stray much from what got them to this point. Stylistically and structurally it is very similar to previous Doves records. To some that may be a detriment, and if I’m being honest, this is not my favorite of their records. Nonetheless, a good Doves album still rates very high on any list I may create, because their pretty good is better than many bests.

volcano choir unmap Best of 2009: 24 & 2323. Volcano Choir – Unmap
Andy: 27 :: Dave: 25

Unmap is unconventional. There is an overwhelming sense of creativity prevalent throughout, which lends the notion the authors were just playing music to see where things went. Everyone at this point knows Justin Vernon’s story regarding his moniker Bon Iver and last year’s sublime, For Emma, Forever Ago. Playing along with post rock concern Collections of Colonies of Bees to form Volcano Choir, Vernon is not attempting to follow up his work as Bon Iver in any way. This music does not adhere to a basic structure and truly couldn’t have been done without one of my favorite voices working today. But perhaps he would not have been able to do something like this without CoCoB. And Vernon, along with this record and all those with the opportunity to have heard this record, benefit all the more.

1000 Minutes: Dave #20

 1000 Minutes: Dave #20As you can see, we have a new header up at the moment. We are preparing a new site, and as such are working on a number of different things for it. Concerning our 1000 Minutes project, I was rather busy last week and missed my scheduled post. Lately I have contributed a little less due mostly to getting a new job; I hope the job will still allow me to contribute as regularly as I have, without screwing with my posting/music consumption/sleeping/eating schedule too much. But hey, it’s a job. Lastly, before I head into the music I wanted to mention the winner of the latest Amie Street Giveaway. As the only proper answer to our query, congrats to JGrow; we will shoot your prize out shortly.

39. The Stranglers – Golden Brown (mp3) from La Folie (3:25) [Time Remaining: 835:54]

Sadly I have to say my first experience with this song is from the film Snatch. I say sadly because the song was around far before the film used it. In my own defense the song was released before I was even born, and I had never been exposed to the band in any form before I heard this song. Regardless of that it is a great tune that hopefully has gotten its due by now. It’s hard not to be reeled in by this incredibly catchy song.

40. Doves – There Goes the Fear (mp3) from The Last Broadcast (6:54) [Time Remaining: 829:00]

Technically, this is the third band I’ve repeated in my list. One band was repeated in a single post, and the other is not so much two songs by the same band as the second is a cover of one of their songs. I mention this because there are few bands I would want to repeat such as Doves. Certainly if limited to only 1000 minutes of music I want to get a great deal of variety, but certain bands merit repeating. The first Doves track I used is The Cedar Room in my first ever 1000 Minutes post because it is very close to being my favorite song of all time. Honestly, this song does not fall far behind. It’s about death, and my personal feelings about this song and what is evoked by it, is too personal and tough for me to editorialize here. I can honestly say not many songs are like that for me, or else I probably wouldn’t be writing about music. For my money you should also watch the music video to get another depth to the song.
