podcast [podcast] tympanocast 009

You know, these might turn out better if I didn’t do them the morning they’re supposed to be up.  Regardless, my penchant for procrastination doesn’t affect how good the songs on here are, so we hope you enjoy them at the very least.

So everyone is aware, we’re going to be in Toronto for NxNE the next time one of these is scheduled, so that week will undoubtedly be postponed since we’ll be drinking and talking to bands and watching them perform.  Expect us back on Saturday, June 25th with another installment of the tympanocasts.

If you haven’t yet subscribed to the podcast, you can do three things: a) keep getting them here, b) get them on iTunes here, or c) subscribe to our tumblr page.  Whichever you choose is fine with us, just so long as you keep listening.

Have a great few weeks everyone!

Painted Palms Canopy cover [mp3] New from Painted Palms // I Will Truck (Dirty Projectors Cover)

You would have thought that my fondness for Dirty Projectors’ most recent album – 2009’s Bitte Orca – would have prompted me to go back and listen to their previous output.  After all, David Longstreth has worked with such a vast array of musicians under the Dirty Projectors’ heading that it all has to be good, right?  And while that assumption may be right, I still haven’t taken the time to explore the rest of the Dirty Projectors’ catalog.

So when I heard that Painted Palms had released a cover of their track “I Will Truck” (from their 2005 release The Getty Address), I didn’t know what to expect.  I listened to Painted Palms’ version first, then went back and heard the original.  As expected, Painted Palms cut down on the inherent quirks of Longstreth’s track, softening some of the sharper points while still molding their cover into something that still feels indebted to the prototype.

If you weren’t aware, since their Bandcamp release of their Canopy EP last fall, Painted Palms has signed with the folks at Secretly Canadian for a physical release of that EP.  (They’ve also been on tour with of Montreal as well.)  Look for the Secretly Canadian version of Canopy to be released on June 27th.

[mp3/live] Dirty Projectors – Temecula Sunrise (Live at Other Music)

bitteorca web [mp3/live] Dirty Projectors Temecula Sunrise (Live at Other Music)Dirty Projectors are a divisive bunch, aren’t they?  Listeners either love them or hate them almost immediately, and there aren’t easy converts to the pro-Projector side once they’ve made a decision.  Consider me a fan; Bitte Orca was my favorite album of 2009, and with the news that they’re re-releasing it through Domino Records as a “tricked out” (their words) double album, I’ll probably start listening to it again.  The expanded edition of Bitte Orca will contain a second disc with five tracks they recorded live at Other Music in NYC, as well as all the b-sides from the album.

In addition to Bitte Orca‘s re-release on September 28th, the band is headed out on a leisurely, monthlong tour that spans the continent.  Those dates are listed below.  Also, Other Music is releasing the five tracks recorded there as a limited edition (500 copies), white vinyl 12″, which you can pre-order over at their website.

Lastly, check out the live version of “Temecula Sunrise” from the re-release below.

Dirty Projectors – I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine (Bob Dylan Cover)

Levis DPPrimaryMicro 562x387 Dirty Projectors I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine (Bob Dylan Cover)If you haven’t been paying attention to it, Levi’s (yes, the jeans people) has been putting out a string of kick-ass covers as a part of something they are calling Pioneer Sessions.  To this point, they’ve had Nas, The Swell Season and She & Him as part of the Sessions, each doing covers of songs that they found personally influential.

The most recent cover is Dirty Projectors doing a Bob Dylan track from Dylan’s John Wesley Harding Dirty Projectors I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine (Bob Dylan Cover).  Regardless of what side of the fence you come down regarding Dirty Projectors’ original tracks (or Bob Dylan covers) – this is excellent.  It’s pretty faithful to the original; it does away with the harmonica parts, and it lacks Dylan’s unique singing style – but there are parts where Longstreth sounds as if he has directly channeled a younger Dylan.

Check out the rest of the Pioneer Sessions here, and keep an eye out for future covers from the likes of The Shins, Passion Pit and Raphael Saadiq.  There’s one every few days or so, and to this point, they have been well worth the time.

Dirty Projectors – Ascending Melody 7″

ascendingmelody Dirty Projectors Ascending Melody 7If you were paying attention this past week, you’ll have seen that Dirty Projectors put out a new 7” entitled Ascending Melody.  If you want it in physical form, you can order it for a couple of bucks, and if you aren’t interested in vinyl singles, you can have the two tracks for just your e-mail address.  However you want it, make sure to get it.

It’s a nice, quick follow-up to last year’s phenomenal Bitte Orca.  The title track is a lively, choppy piece that falls just under 5 minutes, and burrows its merry way into your brain.  The b-side is more reflective – but still upbeat.  Dave Longstreth and Co. have a unique way of sounding completely different while doing something strikingly similar to what they’ve done previously.  And it’s fantastic.

Get the title track here, and go and get the other one via dirtyprojectors.net.  You’ll want to sign yourself up for updates on whatever the band is doing anyway.
