[mp3/concert] tympanogram presents… Friday, October 22

October 22nd Show Poster 791x1024 [mp3/concert] tympanogram presents... Friday, October 22

We’ve already announced two of the three bands who are playing our upcoming Tympanogram Presents show at Bug Jar on Friday, October 22, but if you’ve either missed it, or haven’t been paying attention, let’s recap:

Opening the show is Rochester’s Black Elk Speaks, followed by Hosannas, who are out of Portland, Oregon.  And while that would have been a great show in and of itself, we booked a third band just yesterday who we’re extremely excited to add to the bill: Toronto’s Young Empires.

The show is going to be $6 – a pittance for the amount of excellent music you’re going to hear.  There’s no ticket presale; if you show up at Bug Jar on the night of the show, it’ll still be $6.  (Unless you’re under 21, in which case it’ll cost you $8.)  So, come on out, have some drinks with us and listen to a triumvirate of great bands.

We’d like to thank Tim at Bug Jar for letting us bring shows in and giving us a kickass place to do it, and we’re looking forward to doing it more often from here on out.  Our next shows are already in the works, so be on the lookout for future announcements regarding those.

In the meantime, check out a track from each of the bands right here to get you in the mood, and if you have questions/need information, feel free to get in touch.  We’re excited.  We hope you are too.

[mp3] These Electric Lives @ Bug Jar: 9.4.10

IMG 0309 1024x768 [mp3] These Electric Lives @ Bug Jar: 9.4.10

This past Saturday evening These Electric Lives once again made the short trip south from Toronto to play a show in Rochester. It was their third time in Rochester this year and second at the Bug Jar. My recap will be brief (it’s not even really much of a recap) because I rather unfortunately got a bit too silly to recall most of the evening. It’s also a bit of an apology to the band since I regret my choice of imbibing several drinks on the evening to excess. I hope the band does not think me a lush. I say this because for their previous Bug Jar appearance I was also far too silly. I can count on one hand how many times in the last few years I’ve gotten as inebriated as I did those two evenings, and I could do so just as well if I lost three fingers. I suppose These Electric Lives bring out the crazy in me.

The band members Gary, Mark, Charles and Bryan, are four of the coolest, nicest young gentleman you could ever hope to meet. I just wish I wasn’t apparently so excited every time they come that I drink far too quickly and get crazy. I would really like to catch another full set sometime soon. I only hope they can take this unfortunate recurrence as an odd compliment. The brief bits of the show I do recall are of enjoyment, and I know the band put on an excellent set once again. Thanks to the guys, I hope we can do it again soon.

P.S. Next time they come, I’ll be your D.D. if you need a ride, because you should certainly go check them out.

[concert review/mp3] Ra Ra Riot – Funk N Waffles – Syracuse, NY – August 27, 2010

[concert review/mp3] Ra Ra Riot Funk N Waffles Syracuse, NY August 27, 2010There’s something interesting about a homecoming show.  It’s more loose, more appreciative of the audience, more responsive as a whole.  Ra Ra Riot, coming back to their city of conception – Syracuse, NY – ripped through a 15-song set at Funk N Waffles this past Friday before a sold out crowd of about 150.  (Granted, I am awful at crowd estimation, but the venue isn’t large by any means.)

Situated around the campus of Syracuse University, Funk N Waffles, as the name would suggest, is a waffle bar that moonlights as a concert venue.  The entire place smelled of coffee and waffles, and it doesn’t serve alcohol, so the show retained a coffeehouse vibe throughout.  The place soundtracks its wares with records, and there’s a large mural on the wall behind the stage of a record player with a waffle on it.  There are framed LPs displayed on walls, and a large painting of Stevie Wonder on another wall.  It’s a great spot, and it was nice to see an accomplished band play such an intimate venue.

After having a couple of beers at the bar next door to the venue while waiting for the show to start, Team Goldie came opened the show.  The only thing I knew about Team Goldie (who, as it turns out, is just one guy) was that he had done a remix of Ra Ra Riot’s “Each Year” that I disliked immensely.  His original music wasn’t much better, although the crowd seemed to enjoy it.  If you like screamo rap over manufactured rock, then you’ll like Team Goldie.  I don’t like either of those things, so I didn’t.

Ra Ra Riot, however, was great.  They were clearly glad to be playing back where they started, even if the stage could barely hold all six of them.  The band kept the energy high throughout the show, only slowing down when they played “Can You Tell.”  Wes Miles’ voice was excellent; he can soar when he needs to, make you listen when he wants to – and the rest of the band reinforces his stylings with their effortless chamber pop.

Clearly, the sextet are comfortable with their first album; as their first show since the release of their second LP – The Orchard – the band played eight of the ten songs on their first LP, and six of the ten on their second.  (And the closer was from their debut EP.)  And while the songs from their newest LP were good, the band is able to work better in the frame of their older material, having played it for two years straight.  Their newer songs were much more “by the book,” never really straying from how it sounds on the LP.

That shouldn’t be taken as a complaint, however.  Ra Ra Riot is entertaining as hell to watch; they play so well together, and I’d recommend catching them live if they come around where you are.  It’s worth it.  (For more pictures and another write-up of the show, head over to WERW Radio. I snagged this one from there, since I was in the back of the venue and my Blackberry sucks for pictures.)

[mp3/concert] These Electric Lives and Mikey Jukebox – Saturday, September 4th, Bug Jar

l bf861aad594b4adbac070bc4c13d8603 [mp3/concert] These Electric Lives and Mikey Jukebox Saturday, September 4th, Bug JarIf you hadn’t yet realized, we like These Electric Lives.  Not only are we privileged to consider them friends, but they are a hell of a band as well.  If you haven’t heard them before, you need to listen.  If you have heard them before, you need to listen again.  The guys are great at what they do; their brand of indie dance rock soars on every track.  It’s eminently catchy and imminently singable; the band’s grip on melodic, anthemic songs is showcased on all their releases.

No strangers to the remix, the band has released at least one remix of each one of their tracks in official capacity; their first EP, released in 2007, was released again in 2008 with a 12 track remix album with each of the EP’s tracks being reworked at least twice.

They’re currently working on their debut LP; preceding that release, however, they released an 8 song EP (We See Light…) this past June – with 4 new tracks that will eventually be on the LP, as well as remixes of each.

l 62ac053a4db342b8a90c17bbbb21b05c [mp3/concert] These Electric Lives and Mikey Jukebox Saturday, September 4th, Bug JarJoining TEL this Saturday is Mikey Jukebox, which is the work of one Mike James – former member of Longwave and a Rochester native.  Mikey Jukebox’s debut, self-titled LP was released earlier this year; it’s an album that combines the uniquely American feel of rock ‘n’ roll and mixes it up with the same sort of dance-infused post-punk.

I saw Mikey Jukebox perform as a band earlier in the summer, and in concert the album came across as far more straight-up rock than the album lets on.  When Mr. Jukebox and I talked about it, he made it seem like he was going to break things down a bit for this coming concert, opting to just use the song stems and a guitar.  He may not still be doing it like this, but his ideas sounded cool.

If you’re around Rochester on Saturday night (September 4th), please come out and support a couple of great artists at Bug Jar.  We’re going to be there too; come and say hello.  There’s more information over at Bug Jar’s website, and you can grab a couple of tracks here as well.

Contest!: Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne in Niagara Falls, March 28th

passion pit manners Contest!: Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne in Niagara Falls, March 28thWe’ve given away some things on the blog prior to now – a few albums or EPs on Amie Street last year, an album to our 100th fan on Facebook – but nothing of this magnitude: we have two tickets to the Passion Pit/Mayer Hawthorne concert in Niagara Falls on Sunday, March 28th to give away to a lucky reader.

First, some ground rules:

1. We won’t split the tickets up. Don’t ask.
2. You need to be able to meet on the day of the show – so, be willing to give us your phone number so we can get you the schwag outside the venue. I don’t want to mail the tickets to and have them be resold.
3. If you win, and it turns out you can’t make it, we ask that you please let us know so that someone else can use them.
4. We reserve the right to add any rule we haven’t yet thought of that might apply here.

Them’s the breaks. If you’re still in, here is how we’re going to play this:
