As you should be well aware by now, we here have neither the inclination – nor the time – to act as many other certain blogs do to be the first to post something. Case in point is that as of 9:48 PM E.T. this past Monday evening, 61 blogs had posted the new Fleet Foxes track. Posting the song before even listening to it in a slap-dash manner, just to be the first on HypeM, smacks of desperation to me. Andy was one of the first to mention the new track on Twitter, yet he declined to put it up immediately because he wanted to marinate in its qualities first. Like everyone else, we think our way of doing things is better. Except in our case, we’re right.

This track was used the other night on Chuck. We’ve written admirably about the show’s sound editor previously, and whomever it is has been back on their game lately after a bit of a lull. While it was playing on the show, I recognized the song and soon realized I already had the track on my computer. I had listened to it a few times but didn’t think much about it apparently because I hadn’t even bothered to give it a rating. It’s certainly catchy enough, and the band has a certain, how you say, Passion Pit-ness to them? So, we aren’t the first to post this song, but it’s still worthy of a shout.

Season Finale: Chuck vs. Tympanogram

Two points of order this morning. First, here is the link to Dave’s post on Beirut over at Breakthru Radio:

And second, we’re on their Anatomy of a Blogger show today. It’s up now; give it a listen through their site, but be forewarned: we sound like assholes. I thought that they would have edited out the part where I said what question we were answering, but I guess not. What can you do? It’s still pretty cool I guess.

I tried to find a direct link, but can’t figure it. So, if you go to their site, click on “Program Guide” on the right hand side of the page, and then click “Anatomy of a Blogger” under Thursday, and our show will load right up for your cringe-worthy enjoyment.

We had them use a few of the songs we’ve posted, but we also have some tracks we haven’t talked about here. You can get the playlist on the site as well, but we’ll get it ready for you at some point. And finally – when you say the name of the blog, it’s “pan” as in the frying type, not “pon” as in de river – at least that’s how we say it. Anyway, back to today’s post:

About two-thirds of the way through the season finale of Chuck this past Monday, my girlfriend turned to me and asked: “Why is it that we like this show?” Perhaps it was the wedding-planning CIA agents that finally got to her; I couldn’t give her an actual answer.

When I think about it, however, my answer should have been, and is simply this: the show is entertaining. It has a plot that is completely implausible which doesn’t require me to think, a hot heroine who we see on occasion in her underwear, characters who are both interesting and flawed, and the show can be charming and hilarious in the same episode. That’s why we like this show. (Plus, Zachary Levi seems like he’s cool as hell, unlike that whiny other Zach I watch on Scrubs.)

The fact that Chuck uses great music to augment its best scenes makes it that much better. Here’s some of the music that was used in the finale. Slow Club is in the same vein at The Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson, and this particular track is excellent. I’d heard the Blind Pilot track, but Gramercy Arms was new to me. It’s excellent as well. And even if you don’t watch the show, you’ll enjoy these.

Chuck versus Tympanogram, Part 2

normal chuck zachary levi Chuck versus Tympanogram, Part 2 My girlfriend was out of town on Monday, so we didn’t watch the new episode of Chuck until Tuesday, and all I had was questions. Will Chuck ever get The Intersect out of his head? That bitch of a general says no, but I’m certain that crafty Charles Carmichael will find a way to make it happen. Then he’ll probably have to abort that at the last second to save bumbling Morgan, or Awesome and Ellie, or, more predictably, Sarah, who is the biggest blue-balls giving shrew this side of Tyra (at least as far as Landry is concerned) on Friday Night Lights.

I watch too much TV.

life63 Chuck versus Tympanogram, Part 2 Also, does anyone else watch the show Life? I started because I like Damien Lewis (he was Maj. Winters in Band of Brothers) and stayed because it’s been entertaining for the most part. (And his partner is smoking hot as well.) They’re not as big on the music, but last night they used “Fiery Crash” by Andrew Bird and this one from Secret Machines.

Chuck versus Tympanogram

Chuck versus Tympanogram I’m not a critic of the visual medium in the slightest sense. I like to be entertained and challenged, made to laugh and think, and while I’ll watch a movie based on reviews, I don’t always get what the fuss is about. For example, I think Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale are two of the better actors of our generation. With that said, neither Half Nelson nor The Machinist did anything for me. I was pretty disappointed in both, but maybe I missed something. (I did, on the other hand, like The United States of Leland, but it’s hard for me to remember if it was because of the movie or because Jeremy Enigk did the music for the film.)

Chuck is one of my television guily pleasures. It’s not an Arrested Development situation because it’s not genius by any stretch; it’s a fairly straightforward nerdy guy/hot chick/impossible scenario type of thing. But it entertains me for an hour on Mondays (or whenever I get around to watching it on my DVR) and it doesn’t require me to delve into complicated plot twists and turns after work. I like that.
