Best of 2009: Andy’s Most Listened To

IMG00125 Best of 2009: Andys Most Listened ToWith this, now that it’s January 2nd, we’re done with our Best of 2009 series.  It’s gone on entirely too long, and is probably more self-congratulatory than necessary, but here’s the last one:

I decided to go a more general route with my favorite songs of 2009, and focus more on what I actually listened to over the course of the past 12 months.  A lot of times I am struck by songs long after they are a part of my library, and my listening habits are often products of the time of year, my mood, etc., rather than just what I find to be good.  There’s nothing right or wrong here – and, in fact, each of the Top 5 songs on this list weren’t from albums that made my Best of the Year.  It’s easier to find a song to like rather than an album, and so what I listen to is more an exercise in what has endured, continues to be personally affecting, and ultimately strikes a chord.

1. Local Natives – Airplanes (mp3)
There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Local Natives this year; their debut album Gorilla Manor has already been released in the UK, and is set to come out here at some point in 2010 (I would assume.) From what I’ve heard from the band so far, the album should be incredible.

2. Discovery – Orange Shirt
Discovery’s album held a lot of promise after I first heard “Orange Shirt.” And while it didn’t particularly live up to what I built it up to be, “Orange Shirt” is so perfectly a 21st-Century love song – synthesized, vaguely egotistical, global – that it can’t possibly be ignored.

3. Empire of the Sun – Walking On a Dream
Chalk EotS‘s debut up as another one I was disappointed by after hearing the lead single. Regardless, “Walking On a Dream” is catchy as hell, and its swirly falsetto sticks in my head each time it comes on.

4. Vetiver – Everyday
My first real repeat listen of 2009, “Everyday” is adoring in its simplicity. Mix one part sentimental lyrics, an easygoing guitar and tambourine, and you’ll have a recipe that gets me every time.

5. Blitzen Trapper – Furr
Dave and I interviewed 3 of the 6 members of Blitzen Trapper back in February when they were in town, and to prepare, I listened to Furr non-stop in the weeks prior. The title track is a folk-story set to music, and it’s pretty damn perfect.

6. White Denim – Radio Milk How Can You Stand It
7. The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
8. Cut Off Your Hands – You and I

9. Scott Matthews – Eyes Wider Than Before (mp3)
I picked this song out of an episode of Friday Night Lights early on in the year, and its understated vocals and acoustic guitar made it impossible for me to not listen to.

10. Andrew Bird – Anonanimal
11. Jamie Lidell – Another Day
12. Dirty Projectors – Cannibal Resource
13. Florence + The Machine – Dog Days Are Over

14. Kid Cudi – Simple As… (mp3)
I run to this one. It matches my current pace – but even better, it’s an excellent song.

15. Mayer Hawthorne – Maybe So, Maybe No
16. Dan Auerbach – Whispered Words (Pretty Lies)
17. Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet
18. Tokyo Police Club – Be Good
19. Mark Ronson – Valerie (feat. Amy Winehouse)

20. Darwin Deez – Radar Detector (mp3)
This song came out of nowhere for me. I picked it up from RCRD LBL, and it knocked me over with its almost childlike love story, and its ability to work its way directly into my brain.

21. Ray LaMontagne – Trouble
22. Annuals – Confessor
23. Q-Tip – Gettin’ Up
24. Mayer Hawthorne – Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out
25. Girls – Lust For Life

Best of 2009: Dave’s 111 Most Enjoyed Songs, Part Important

photo2 225x300 Best of 2009: Daves 111 Most Enjoyed Songs, Part ImportantForget those two first parts, these are the real best songs of 2009. In my estimation that is. I think most if not all, were released in 2009, but those that were not came into my consciousness at one point during the year. Andy will have his list prepared for tomorrow and then we should be done with this crap and back to your regularly scheduled programming. Or not, we shall see. Go to Amazon Best of 2009: Daves 111 Most Enjoyed Songs, Part Important to buy stuff.

For the many who may have not heard this, just try and dislike it.
21. Passion Pit – The Reeling
20. Girls – Lust For Life
I struggled with where to place this song. I thought it would be higher, and perhaps it should be. But its placement does not detract from how much I love it.
19. Bombay Bicycle Club – The Hill
18. Grizzly Bear – While You Wait For The Others
17. Bombay Bicycle Club – Autumn
16. Washed Out – Feel It All Around
15. Discovery – Swing Tree

12. Local Natives – Airplanes
I’ll leave the flattery of this for Andy.

11. Bon Iver & St. Vincent – Roslyn (mp3)
Another entry into the beauty that defines Justin Vernon’s work. Only enhanced by the contributions of Annie Clark.

10. Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This
Hard to pick the best off this amazing record.

9. The Static Jacks – My Parents Lied
I start this song over, at least once, every time I hear it.

8. Atlas Sound – Shelia
Without a doubt the catchiest chorus including a woman’s name this year, high up there all time for me.

7. Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able
My wife’s favorite song off this record, and very closely second for me.

6. Phoenix – 1901
If my hard drive hadn’t crashed, I believe this would have the highest play count in iTunes for the year.

5. Florence + The Machine – Cosmic Love
My favorite on this album from day one. I’m glad it’s getting love from our friends as well.

4. Mew – Introducing Palace Players (mp3)
It almost sounds like they are doing everything wrong, except perfectly.

3. Atlas Sound – Walkabout [W/ Noah Lennox]
Only in a year such as this would this song only be the third best in my eyes.

2. Animal Collective – My Girls
One of the greatest songs of the decade, but it can’t beat my number one.

1. Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks (mp3)
Just simply perfection. A perfect pop song that exemplifies incredible song writing chops, technical ability and wonderful vocal evocation.

Best of 2009: Dave’s 111 Most Enjoyed Songs, Part Two

photo1 225x300 Best of 2009: Daves 111 Most Enjoyed Songs, Part TwoHere is installment two. I’m not expounding just why I like all of these in order to get my list done and not have you sift through a novel to get a few songs. I already know that I forgot tunes from at least one band (whose album is actually in this picture) so this list is likely a worthless exercise, but here it continues nonetheless.

Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3

To finish up our brief look at what we think were the best EPs from this past year, we’ve got four of ‘em.  I had originally planned on three, but I forgot about one of my favorites.  I won’t tell you which I left off of my original list.

black Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer

Previously sold exclusively at their shows, Blitzen Trapper’s Black River Killer EP is an extension of their 2008 release Furr.  At just over 17 minutes for 7 songs, it’s a quick showcase of what Blitzen Trapper does best – their unique, Northwestern take on indie-folk.  Black River Killer will further endear them to previous fans, while offering enough to reel in new ones as well.

tpobpah higher than the stars 400x400 Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Higher Than the Stars

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s Higher Than the Stars EP is a nice companion to their acclaimed self-titled debut that came out earlier in the year.  Their shoegaze influenced twee-pop is as affecting as here as on their debut, but it doesn’t expand anything in a new direction.  Their formula works well, and with the 4 remixes tacked onto the end of the EP, it shows that even if it’s reorganized, it’s still just as good.

bloodbank 480 Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 3Bon Iver – Blood Bank

Three of the four songs on Bon Iver’s January EP Blood Bank were written for his now-epic (and two years old) For Emma, Forever Ago.  Not included because they didn’t fit thematically, they work here as their own separate entity.  Aching and melodic, Blood Bank is a stellar look at where Bon Iver has already been with his last release, and where he could very well go with his next.

We found out about The Static Jacks after discovering Amie Street in May.  They were our first giveaway on the blog, and their September EP Laces showed marked improvement over their previous EPs.  Gone are the rough edges while their testosterone-fueled and handclaps version of garage rock is retained.  It’s upbeat, confident, and shows off a band ready to own their piece of stardom.

Today we continue our look at some of our favorite EPs from the past year; we’ve got one more of these set for tomorrow as well.

Animal Collective Fall Be Kind EP Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 2Animal Collective – Fall Be Kind

As if 2009 wasn’t busy enough for AnCo, their Fall Be Kind EP was released at the end of November.  (The EP, interestingly, contains the first licensed sample of The Grateful Dead on “What Would I Want? Sky.”)  It’s signature Animal Collective – space-y, psychedelic rock that’s cementing them a place at laser light shows across the nation twenty years from now when our kids are getting stoned.

51BD9x3ol8L Best of 2009: EPs and Singles, Part 2Death Cab for Cutie – The Open Door

Since their move away from Barsuk, reviews of Death Cab’s material has gone steadily downward.  It may just be coincidental, but the indie goodwill they’d built up prior seems to have been waning.  With The Open Door, the band released a few of the tracks from the Narrow Stairs sessions.  A little less produced and polished than what ended up making the cut for that album, the songs sound much better.

After a quiet couple of years, Josh Rouse took the unconventional route with his recent Valencia EP.  Comprised of the leftovers from his forthcoming LP, Valencia is an excellent pre-cursor to what should be an excellent album.  It’s upbeat, influenced by his current residency in Spain, and warms up the long winter nights with hints of the impending spring.
