After a little more than a month away from doing one of these posts, it’s been interesting to think about what I might want to put in my next one. If you hadn’t noticed, we tend to shy away from posting tracks from, say, The Beatles. This isn’t because we don’t love The Beatles, but more that their music isn’t personally defining. But maybe I’m just speaking for me. Let’s get back into it. It’s probably going to be another month before I do another one of these.
121. Badly Drawn Boy – Disillusion (mp3) from The Hour of Bewilderbeast
(4:07) [Time Remaining: 448:39]
I haven’t been much of a fan of Damon Gough’s work after his Mercury Prize-winning The Hour of Bewilderbeast. But my appreciation for his first album is so complete that I could include at least two more songs from it on my particular list. That’s in addition to this one and “Once Around the Block,” which I talked about previously. ”Disillusion” is just such a flat out great feeling song that it is impossible to ignore. It ends with a rollicking minute and a half jam session that defines what I love so much about it. It’s like he sings in the lyrics: “Why’d you have to make it so complicated? Can’t it just be beautiful?” Sometimes, that’s all any of us need to hear.
122. Ben Folds Five – Selfless, Cold and Composed (mp3) from Whatever & Ever Amen
(6:10) [Time Remaining: 442:29]
On the opposite end of the spectrum from Badly Drawn Boy is Ben Folds Five’s “Selfless, Cold and Composed.” I play this song often when it gets into fall around here. With the falling leaves and the autumn rains, it becomes much more apropos. It’s a sweeping, sad song about the end of a relationship. (Ben Folds has been married four times, so he has plenty of experience on that subject from which to draw.) And while my own relationships might not end with such gorgeous music, I can certainly identify with the sentiment of wanting the other person to display some kind of emotion over the end of a relationship. Thankfully, it’s been a while since I’ve had to feel that way.
It’s Wednesday, so it’s leftover day here at Tympanogram. We’ve got some remixed Black Kids, an older Badly Drawn Boy remix from Mr. Scruff (whose music you know from a car commercial), and some remixed music from the lovely ladies of Au Revoir Simone. Wash your hands. We’re not telling you again.
Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You (The Twelves Remix) (mp3) from I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You 12″
Badly Drawn Boy – Disillusion (Mr. Scruff Remix) (mp3) from Disillusion 10″
Au Revoir Simone – Dark Halls (Best Fwends Remix) (mp3) from Reverse Migration
While I haven’t gotten through the entire album yet, the new Silversun Pickups album is excellent so far. A lot more focused than their debut, less ethereal and less swirly/shoegaze guitar. That may be terrible for some of their fans, but I think it works for them. (NOTE: because I haven’t listened to it enough, I reserve the right to completely reverse or change my opinion without good explanation.)
Here is the next installment of my 1000 Minutes project.
17. The Stills – Changes Are No Good (mp3) (3:42) from Logic Will Break Your Heart [Time Remaining: 9:35:12]
Dave will probably disagree with my choice off of this album. In truth, it was between this and “Animals + Insects” for me, but I listened to this song so frequently when I got the album that I had to give it the nod.
Maybe The Stills will never get back to the beauty they created on this album, but I sure hope so. I really really enjoyed that album, and their subsequent efforts have only elicited a “meh” or two from me.
18. Badly Drawn Boy – Once Around the Block (mp3) (3:54) from The Hour of Bewilderbeast [Time Remaining: 931:18]

After I bought Badly Drawn Boy‘s excellent The Hour of Bewilderbeast, I spent some time finding his older songs. And I found that, on his previous EPs and singles, Mr. Gough played more experimental folk than the straight-ahead rock of his latter years, and it was always interesting to listen to it when compared with his newer albums. The songs were simple, loopy and understated, and consistently lo-fi, and show the promise of an artist that seems, at least from the vantage of today, to be somewhat unfulfilled.
Bady Drawn Boy – Shake the Rollercoaster (mp3) from EP1
Badly Drawn Boy – I Love You All (mp3) from EP2
Badly Drawn Boy – My Friend Cubilas (mp3) from EP3
