Tokyo Police Club – Breakneck Speed

We make no secret of our affinity for Tokyo Police Club around here.  Their jagged, erudite garage rock has been a welcome lyrical respite from most of their contemporaries – in addition to the fact that they are a solid band musically.  It’s with that in mind that we are salivating over their forthcoming release.

Due out on June 8, Champ is the first release on Mom + Pop Records for the Canadian foursome, and if it follows along similar paths as their debut EP and album, it should vie for the top spot on our Best of 2010.  “Breakneck Speed” made it’s debut last week on Stereogum, and despite the name of the track, it’s about as spread out as you’ll hear from TPC.  If you’re versed in Elephant Shell, it’s more akin to “Listen to the Math” than anything else.  It’s more spaced out than straightforward, and it’s pretty damn solid.

The band is set to embark on a cross-Atlantic, cross-North America tour in support of the album with Passion Pit.  Check the dates here, and look for them around where you are.
