[stream] Toro Y Moi // So Many Details

Lost in the past few months of my listening to What’s Going On and Blue Train a whole bunch was all the new stuff that’s going to be coming out in the coming months. Luckily, music is cool with you taking a break, because once you come back to it, it acts like you never left at all. None of its annoying habits have changed; you just need to catch your bearings and get restarted.

And that’s where I find myself this morning, hung up on this Toro Y Moi track that’s been around for nearly three months since it’s debut in mid-October. “So Many Details” is the lead cut from Anything In Return, Toro Y Moi’s new album, which is set for release on January 22nd.

The track itself finds Chas Bundick, the lone man behind the Toro Y Moi moniker, still making the seductive, electronic jams that he’s been putting out for the past few years. From what I’ve read about Anything In Return, it seems to have been Bundick’s goal to put out a true pop album, something devoid of the bubblegum that dominates the popular music airwaves.

While that’s an admirable goal, “So Many Details” (and likely the rest of Anything In Return) isn’t going to slot itself anywhere on Top 40 radio playlists. The song’s spirit is darker than that. Bundick’s version of pop, thankfully, is still firmly entrenched on the outskirts of the establishment. It’s unhurried, not beholden to formula, and when left to develop on its own, it’s ultimately more rewarding than the current standard for pop.

“So Many Details,” if you don’t have it for your very own, is available in exchange for your email address on Toro Y Moi’s website. And if you’ve already worn the song out, listen again in preparation for the album that’s out in less than three weeks.
