I’ve had this track in my back pocket for a couple of weeks at this point and have yet to share it with everyone. I could tell you it’s because I’m busy, or lazy, or selfish, but let’s go with my preferred excuse: that I was saving it for Valentine’s Day so you could all get your slow jam on with your significant other. “All The Sweetness,” despite its saccharine title, however, is a somber, heartsick song about facing the possible end of a relationship. And while it may seem like the whole thing is done somewhat tongue-in-cheek, 8th Grader’s panache sells it perfectly.
You might remember us talking about 8th Grader back in late 2011 when I ran across his track “Heavy Without You”, which I listened to a whole bunch and subsequently purchased on 7″ vinyl when it was released a few months ago. And I find myself in the same predicament with “All The Sweetness” that I did when I first heard that debut track: dealing with a strange nostalgia for a certain brand of early-Nineties RnB. With the recent resurgence of the beats from that time period in the indie landscape, 8th Grader is certainly not out of place among his contemporaries, but he’s placed himself squarely on the opposite end of the spectrum, opting for a radio-friendly nu-soul. I can’t imagine he’ll toil unnoticed for much longer.
No word on whether this one is going to get a release on physical media as well. I’m hoping it does, but as a part of an EP or album, myself.
