of montreal [mp3/video] of Montreal // Black Lion Massacre

of Montreal are one of those few bands who truly warrant use of the term “bat crap insane.” You can apply terms like that to bands who put on crazy live shows, pull audacious publicity stunts or experiment like Dr Frankenstein on acid, but of Montreal are just plain bizarre. All the time. And people take that with varying pinches of salt. Whatever dose you take it with, I advise that you stick to that amount right now because their trademark eclectic, frenetic and sexual insanity is as present as ever on “Black Lion Massacre.”

This track was made available towards the end of the week and is the opening track of a newly announced EP, thecontrollersphere, out April 26th via Polyvinyl. Having said that it’s as weird as anything of Montreal have done, it’s breaking some new ground; especially when compared to the flamboyant funk/soul of 2010 album False Priest (though interestingly, the songs on the EP apparently come from that album’s recording sessions).

The whole thing is one big sprawl of stabbing, discordant guitar screeches and drum smashing, with an ominous bassline and occasional punches of beyboard. It sounds a lot harsher than previous material. Kevin Barnes delivers a truly bizarre spoken word performance in which his voice is warped down an octave and laced in some truly creepy echoes. The spoken word section is only brief and gives way to a couple of minutes of harsh noise – which is strangely rhythmic and addictive – but he manages to tell a short story about his “mistress” appearing a “black lion”, taking his temperature whilst he’s in the oven, and then masturbating in the front garden. Whatever floats your boat Kev.

Also, there’s a short and equally off-the-wall video which seems to be related to the song entitled “Black Lion Massacre is Coming.” It looks like a cross between The Blair Witch Project and a deleted scene from Kick-Ass:
