In addition to being a beautiful looking piece of land in Canada, Bruce Peninsula is also a large gathering of musicians who make the kind of wailing gospel rock that calls believers together and brings non-believers in for a closer look. “Crabapples” is my favorite track from what I’ve heard; it’s loud and intense, and it gives me a similar feeling to Port O’Brien, but without the raucous joy that Port O’Brien brings to their music.
I’m not saying that Bruce Peninsula isn’t joyful about what it is they are doing, but their output is far more concentrated and heavy. Reports differ on how many people are actually in the group. Their website says eleven; their picture on the NXNE site shows ten, as does the photo to the left here.
But the actual numbers don’t really matter. To achieve the fullness and drive of their music takes a force that is rarely displayed. This is a band I’m looking forward to seeing; based on what I’ve heard to this point, I’m certain their live show transcends a normal concert going experience.
Bruce Peninsula plays The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on Saturday the 19th. Delve into more of their backstory at their site and their MySpace.
