New Releases: March 2

New Releases: March 2This is another slow-ish week for new music. If you want our recommendations, we’ll probably pick up the Rogue Wave and Athlete albums, the Little Boots album (if you didn’t get it last year), and the album from The Ruby Suns. Like we always do, there are a some tracks after the list, only this week we’re feeling generous and putting up three. Maybe it has something to do with the changing of the calendar to March.

We hope everyone has a stellar week. We’re busy tying up loose ends for our birthday show this coming Saturday, if you hadn’t heard.

No love for 'these new Puritans'?
From what I've heard, the album sounds good..

Two weeks in a row my top pick didn't make your list. I'm not sure Tympanogram is the music blog for me…just kidding. I preordered the new Shearwater LP from Matador a while back. I loved Rooks and the reviews I'm hearing about the new one have me excited.

Good luck getting the last details of the show sorted. Wish I could make it out, but I will be on the road again.

I left the Shearwater album off since I think I had it up a couple of weeks back.

But, I understand if my leaving off “Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band” from last week means you won't be reading anymore. I hope you find a blog that caters more to your tastes. (sarcasm)

And, hopefully we'll be around for a year 2 birthday show – and you can make that one. I'm sure we'll have pictures up.

Eh, I'll hang on one more week. But if you don't give my boy Ted Leo a shout out, that might be it. ;)

Seriously though, Silver Mt. Zion definitely have made their best album yet. The Godspeed You! elements are all gone now and they are a straight up, pissed off punk band (with violins).

That Rogue Wave track is solid. I just got back from the Noise Pop festival in San Fran and they were the Wednesday night Bottom of the Hill Show. Unfortunately I didn't get in until Thursday, seeing a band like that in a small venue like BotH would be awesome. (Obligitary gloating section: but I did get to see Atlas Sound, Mark Kozelek, Laura Gibson, Edward Sharpe, Visqueen & unfortunately the Watson Twins who were horrible).

I'd never even heard of that band. I just figured you were giving us a hard time for not posting the most verbose band name out there.

The Rogue Wave is getting panned; I'm into their older stuff, and because of that I'll still get “Permalight,” but if it's as bad as it's being made out to be, it might be my last straw with them.

I bought These New Puritans, but I didn't want to rec it without hearing it first. Still haven't listened to it though, so I can't rec it now either…

I'm sorry to hear that. For me, Rogue Wave were one of the few interesting bands left in a particular alt rock territory that had gone quite stale.

I can see how you would think I was giving you a hard time. For all purposes, TSMZMO&TLLB have been giving us all a hard time by adding new words to their name for each new album. They are an interesting outgrowth of the instrumental crescendo-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. At first, they were like a chamber music version of GY!BE, but have deviated significantly over the years, and have created a ridiculous band name that ensures that the record store I shop at will never stock the new release unless I special order it…
