[mp3/video] Mood Rings // Promise Me Eternity

We first talked of Mood Rings back in January of the year most recently deceased when Andy discussed their four-track Sweater Weather Forever. The EP is fuzzy, relaxed and packed with jangly melodies, yet I never quite found the allure I thought I might. I recall reading comparisons to Deerhunter, so that was the basis for my unfulfilled assumptions of lofty expectations. Re-listening to the EP a year later in the wake of this new track and video I caught wind of has me reconsidering that stance. This go around I found a subtle depth to the band’s shoegaze that was previously missing, and I’m quite certain I’ll be coming back around to experience it again.

As for the band’s new track, “Promise Me Eternity” has an immediacy previously hidden. From the get go callbacks are missing amid a surprisingly effervescent hook that wouldn’t be out of place during the Reagan era. But then the track drops tempo and returns to familiar ground, featuring the band’s steady, mellow pacing in their hazy, downcast melodies. The video fittingly is a dream like affair, centering on a wispily mustachioed youngster traipsing through imaginary woods.
