Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) released one of my ten favorite albums in 2011 with their self-titled debut. The fuzzy funk, blues, and pop was a breath of fresh air in an industry where bands either strive to be the next electro-pop wonder or the latest psych-pop mind-trip. Ruban Nielson and co. said nuts to that and fused together a plethora of genres on their album. The crafted set of tunes from the release were heavy on the riffs, on target with the hooks, and complementary to the simplistic beats and funky bass lines. One of the greatest characteristics of this band was the wonderment they created both in their music and on what the future would bring for them.
[mp3] Unknown Mortal Orchestra // I’ll Come Back 4 U
Well, here it is: “I’ll Come Back 4 U” is the latest number from Ruban, and it carries quite a bit of new air with it, along with enough familiarity that makes it easy to tell that this UMO coming through the speakers. That and the text-message stylization for the song titled. Written for Adult Swim‘s Single Series, the lo-fi fuzz has been cleaned up a bit, and has been replaced with a newer version of Ruban. With Ruban 2.0, his voiced is still reverberated, but more audible and a bit higher in tone. That being said, this is not a bad thing at all, because the music is still all UMO. Psychedelic strums laid over a driving beat, while the bass thumps right along with the melody. This is the kind music I became addicted to when I first heard, “How Can You Luv Me,” and makes me even more excited for what we’ll be hearing from these guys in the future.
