Yesterday, upon returning from my vacation, I checked up on the blog to see the state of things. Quite unaware of what shuffler.fm was, I saw that this unknown site had directed a good amount of traffic our way. Upon further inspection, the concept of the site is unique, and based on the traffic we have gotten apparently popular already. I urge you to investigate on your own. When I did my own investigation of the site (I don’t recall what genre I initially chose) the following song came on. And oh, what a song it is.
I searched the original, and though I prefer the remix, it is due to the dramatic and percussive tweaks its remixer’s are sometimes (perhaps unfortunately) criticized for. Yet in conjunction with the already strong original, the tweaks form a more indelible sound. Freelance Whales’ presence is immediately felt in the altered vocal track, atmospherics and glockenspiel at the outset, then it delves into unfamiliar territory, at least to me. The remix changes the tone into something straight from an 80′s movie’s soul-searching montage, but totally in a good way.
I had never much examined Jukebox the Ghost, and was previously wholly unfamiliar with their music. If this remixed debut single from their forthcoming record is at all representative, that unfamiliarity will be changing wholesale shortly. Everything Under The Sun, the band’s sophomore release, is due in a few weeks time; it now holds a steady, unblinking spot on my radar.
