One of the more frustrating aspects of clearing through the brush of our submissions inbox is seeing all the concerts that we’re not going to be able to attend. Most recently, we got an e-mail from the people at 20 Sided Records about their compilation release party this upcoming weekend. Unfortunately, it’s on the other side of the country in San Francisco (which, by the way, has a rash of good music coming out of it lately).
With the e-mail, they sent a couple of tracks, and this one – by San Francisco’s Slow Trucks – caught my ear immediately. It’s reminiscent of what I used to listen to when I was in high school – old Tooth & Nail bands like Sal Paradise and Luxury. It’s earnest indie rock; it sounds exactly like I remember defining “indie rock” to be when I became aware that there was far more to music than what I had previously been aware.
On Slow Trucks’ MySpace, there’s a quote under the “About [The Band]” section that’s pretty telling, actually:
“Does “Gimme Indie Rock” by Sebadoh make you smile? If it does (and it should), then consider Slow Trucks the next generation, rolling with this old school shit, making it their own, and ultimately making indie rock fun again. When did things get so serious? Yeah, there’s room for bands with 2/3 time-signatures, French horns and yelpy vocals, but sometimes a hook cranked through a big muff pedal, liquid bass lines and a pummeling backbeat just sounds right. Energetic, uncomplicated and infectious, Slow Trucks are musical comfort food, perfect for those of us who still occasionally break out that Treepeople CD or fantasize about an Archers of Loaf reunion.”
The 20 Sided Records Compilation Release Party is this weekend in San Francisco, so if you’re out that way, check out the glut of bands that will be performing on Friday and Saturday.
