For the first five seconds of “Mexican Mavis” from Sydney, Australia’s Boy & Bear, you might think you’re listening to a new Fleet Foxes track. Then Dave Hosking’s vocals start in, and you realize that you’re onto something different altogether. Boy & Bear are not as pastoral as the band you first compared them to; they’ve developed a stiffer musical resolve, incorporating a far more pronounced percussion section and (gasp!) electric guitars into their work. It’s a representative slice of the band’s work – lilting guitars, soaring harmonies, a darker aura strung throughout.
“Mexican Mavis” is off of Boy & Bear’s forthcoming new EP – With Emperor Antarctica. The five-song release will hit the streets (in the UK) on December 6 on 10” vinyl and digital via Chess Club. They have three shows in New York in a couple of weeks before they head out on a UK in support of the release, which starts at the end of November. If you’re in those parts of the world, head over to their MySpace for the dates and venues.
