The resurgence of shimmering surf rock over the past year or so is a welcomed occurrence.  And while the list of bands putting their own spin on the renewed genre is growing steadily, French Films seems to get everything right.  Hailing from Finland, this five piece sounds as if they have channelled The Cure musically and Peter Murphy vocally – and they sound fantastic doing it.  So fantastic that they will be opening for Shearwater when they play in Helsinki in August.

My excitement about the band is tempered by the fact that this song is, in fact, the only one that the band has allowed anyone to hear at this point (unless, of course, you live in Finland and can see them perform, where I assume they must play more than one song).  Their MySpace page claims that they will have an EP out soon; I’ll be looking forward to hearing what else they have in their repertoire.

As an aside: I don’t have an affinity for the cinema of France; I liked Amélie just fine, but this band name is one of my favorites in recent memory.
