I have a friend who works for a label in NYC who sent me over a recap of his first night of CMJ this afternoon – running down the shows he’d seen (including my recommendation of The Static Jacks) – and he unequivocally said that the first show ever from Bad Books at the Bowery last night was the highlight of the evening.
Now, Bad Books isn’t a name I had heard before earlier this week, and then all of a sudden they’ve been on everyone’s lips. (Also, their album was just released on Tuesday.) So, I figured I should at least hear what it was that everyone has been talking about. Turns out that it’s a combination of Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine, and the project has this great AM folk/rock retro feeling to it.
This particular song is just a quick one, clocking in at less than two minutes, but it doesn’t need any more time. It’s as complete as it needs to be, stripped of pretense and extras – charging straight ahead. I’ve listened to it a half a dozen times in the past 15 minutes (being under two minutes helps that), and each time I find myself enjoying it more.
