[mp3] Arcade Fire – Ready to Start

b3 [mp3] Arcade Fire Ready to Start

Perhaps more than any other band today besides Radiohead, Montreal’s Arcade Fire have an aura of invincibility. Anything they touch is instantly gold and critically revered. They write better music; they have smarter and more incisive lyrics; they rarely release anything that isn’t loved. Because why would they release something they know to be sub-par? They’re just better.

I say these things truthfully. I believe them. Funeral [mp3] Arcade Fire Ready to Start is perhaps the greatest album of the previous decade; it is certainly within my personal top five. Neon Bible was never going to be on the same level; as a follow-up to such an incredible album that was too difficult a task. Yet it has no shortage of immensely beautiful, and nearly perfect, moments. It is high time we gave our reflections here on their third, The Suburbs. I’m not certain Andy feels the same, but this is already close to, if not the top album of the year for me. And it was likely always going to be. That is the power of the band: not only surviving great expectations, but meeting them when it makes so much more sense that they wouldn’t.

The aura is at maximum effect on “Ready to Start.” If I had to choose an early favorite track, this would be it. Mainly because of the first few seconds. My favorite track is likely to change; this being a favorite of the year will not.
