Wild Nothing has a lot to live up to in 2012. At least for me, personally. Jack Tatum’s debut full-length Gemini was my Album of the Year in 2010, and 2011′s Golden Haze EP added another dimension to a blossoming career. We’re two months into the new year and we’ve already received a tease of what Tatum has up his sleeve. The Nowhere 7” is slated for a February 21 drop date and contains two solid numbers that expand on the Wild Nothing M.O. of guitar jangles, ethereal vocals, and entrancing rhythms.

The title track is available below and it’s unlike anything Tatum has released yet. Past songs have included nothing but what you would expect from dream-pop creators: guitars, bass, keyboards, and drums. With “Nowhere,” we hear a harmonica – kind of out of place for his style. Perhaps it’s a melodica, but nonetheless it’s a sound that gives the track a unique sound while still holding tight to the clouds that Wild Nothing’s notes float on.

The vocals are another component that stand out as a stark contrast to previous releases. Tatums voice sounds the same, but the effects have vanished and what remains is a simplified version of his melodic spoken-word singing. It’s fitting with the instrumentation, and the addition of Twin Sister’s Andrea Estella on vocals certainly provides an enchanting dynamic, almost as if she’s the replacement for Tatum’s older style. With “Nowhere,” along with the B-side, “Wait,” Wild Nothing’s sophomore album is shaping up to be another pop gem.
