[mp3] Total Babes // Be So True

total babes swimming through sunlight album cover [mp3] Total Babes // Be So True

The advance copy of Cleveland lo-fi four piece Total Babes’ new album, Swimming Through Sunlight, got sent around to discerning bloggers back in the middle of August, which was surprising for me because I hadn’t even listened to the first two songs they released from it, obviously rendering me something closer to non-discerning.  No matter.  The relationship of how good a song is to how soon after it is released that I hear it is unprovable (and tenuous at best); “Be So True” is still a great, infectious song despite its kicking around the blogs for nearly two months at this point.

One half of Total Babes also plays with Dylan Baldi as a part of Cloud Nothings, so the similarities between the two bands shouldn’t be surprising.  They both play sneering, snotty punk that comes in short bursts, and both of their albums employ a fantastically cacophonous sound, as if everything could fall apart at any second.  Last week on Twitter I said that Swimming Through Sunlight reminded me of swilling shitty keg beer at basement shows before I could drink legally, when no one could really play their instruments or sing particularly well.  And I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

Swimming Through Sunlight is out now through the fine folks at Old Flame Records.  Pick up a copy.
